Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I finally convinced my mother to part with her copy of this wonderful story which she had read to me when I was young.

Mother Carey's Chickens

It is a touching family story and is written by Kate Douglas Wiggin. (the same author who wrote Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm.)

You know, it is funny you have mentioned this book. I was watching Pirates of the Caribbean 2 the other day and sailor yelled these three word out loud as an exclamation, as the Kraken attacked their ship - and I thought to myself, "Who is Mother Carey and her chickens?"

I have a copy of that book, too. There's a 1938 movie by the same name, and then Disney remade it a bit into "Summer Magic" with Haley Mills which we enjoyed so much as kids.

There are a few old books I have that I loved, and bought because I recognized the titles from old movies that I enjoyed. Besides "Cheaper by the Dozen" and "Belles on Their Toes" I've enjoyed:

Life with Father by Clarence Day
The Egg and I by ?
Room for One More
Mama's Bank Account (movie "I Remember Mama")

Except for "The Egg and I" these had a common theme of larger families.
