Have any of your children or you read her Hall Family Chronicles series? I found them at a thrift shop for $.99 & am wondering if there would be anything of concern in them.

I guess if none of you can help me I might have to read them myself!

I like them, but they are a bit odd--fantasy-type odd. They can be read on two levels. There is some discussion of the philosophies of the Thoreau and friends, and some Indian (Eastern) philosophy, too, but for younger kids, it's just fun, and for older kids, it's a launching point for discussing the philosophy of Thoreau and friends, their ideas, and the true faith .

For OLDER kids, Jane Langton has written whole series of Homer Kelly mysteries, many of which I've read and enjoyed. He lives in Concord, MA which is where I grew up, and although the mysteries are fairly predictable, the author does include alot of factual information and history about whatever setting the book is in....so far I remember reading about various Concord authors, Nantucket, the old South Church in Boston, Harvard, and the newest one I saw at the library but haven't read yet is from Gettysburg.   From a Catholic viewpoint, I can't say I found anything truly ANTI Catholic, although as an earlier post says it does contain some bits and pieces of more liberal thought....for an older reader, it might start some good discussion.

Great literature? Uh-uh....just an occassional excursion for this mystery lover!
