Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My soon to be 12 year old son loves these. He's read the first three in the series and is requesting more. I was just wondering if anyone has read or previewed the later ones, especially when he is an adult in the books. Are they appropriate for a child? Which ones would be appropriate?

Thanks for any help!

My husband is currently reading this series to our kids. He's on the last book of the series. He said the only "adult" topic in the later books is that sometimes there are scenes with people getting drunk. He's really enjoyed the series with the kids.

I resisted the later books for a while because I wasn't sure but the boys broke me down and we got them all (we own them all on Audible, and the non-readers listen to them over and over and over). They really aren't bad. I'd read some reviews about Shaking the Nickel Bush that made me leary because they were upset at his lying to his mother about what he was doing and felt "character" wasn't as strongly emphasized, but honestly, after listening to it, it doesn't bother me much. He really was in a sticky spot trying to make money to send home without having his mother worry about his health (he'd been diagnosed with diabetes in a time before blood tests and insulin). He wasn't perfect, but who of us is?

My favorite, favorite book is Mary Emma and Company. The boys rarely listen to that one . They do listen to the one where he visits his grandfather, and while there is nothing "bad" in it, his grandfather is a very difficult man, and it makes my blood pressure go up every time I listen to it. That and the fact that the narrator mispronounces victuals (instead of saying it properly like "vittles") and hay mow (he says mow like you are mowing grass). Aaaagh!!!! But that shouldn't be an issue if you are reading them instead of listening

Thank you, Monica and Lindsay! I ordered the next 3 (Mary Emma, Fields of Home and Shaking the Nickel Bush). I'm saving the last two for Christmas.

It's funny you mention about the Grandfather one, because that is exactly what this page was saying.

My son read them as soon as I gave them, but he's grown to love them even more, and has reread them several times. Always good to see!

How funny, my DH didn't even mention the grandfather to me. Men have a different take, don't they?
