Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm running a joint co-op for ~15 catholic & protestant families K-12. We're covering the early church (Christ to the fall of Rome) over 8 weeks. I need a picture book for literature for each of those 8 weeks for the K-2 crowd.

I don't want to overwhelm the co-op with saint books to buy for the co-op, but this is also the closest I'll get to teaching my protestant friends what the Catholic Church teaches about the early church. They are trusting me to instruct their children while being respectful of the parent's beliefs. So miracle stories need to be few and far between.

It's an honor and a responsibility I've been looking forward to -- but a challenge. My children have been raised on so many BEAUTIFUL saint picture books during this time period in history, that I'm sort of stuck.

Are there any picture books on the early church fathers? Fall of Rome?

LOL - I see at 59 posts and a board member for 8 years and 12 years of hs'ing -- I'm still a forum "rookie". Hahaha, it's fun to be considered a newbie!!

The first two that come to mind are:
Christopher the Holy Giant - Tomie dePaola
St Valentine - Robert Sabuda
there could well be more but that is all I found when we did this unit but that was years ago!
Do have some older children recs as well for Early Church/Romans 33AD - 300AD

This is a time frame that really doesn't have that much in the picture book realm. The thread Picture Books Through History - List has a few. I can't think of any on church fathers unfortunately.

I seem to remember a Christian (not Catholic) series that included biographies of prominent early church figures. I remember rolling my eyes a bit because, once it hit Martin Luther, the figures were all Protestant . But, it might included some options that would work for your class. In searching for the series (I cannot find it!), I came across this other series that has a few books in that might work for you, Heroes of the Faith

Both Margaret Hodges and Rumer Godden have picture books about St. Jerome and the Lion.

St. Patrick might be a stretch for the time period, not sure, but And God Blessed the Irish is an exciting read for younger ones. It is a longer, wordy picture book.
