who isn't interested in "big" books yet reads wells. I should also mention he likes books about animals or adventure or kids his age in everyday life that is different than his own.

I'm working on making his list for the upcoming year and I'm out of ideas for him! I gave him The Secret Garden (after I got it from the library and read it myself for the first time) thinking he would like the mystery and the secret (which he does) but he looked at the size of the book and won't read it in his free time since he has shorter books on hand he can read.

He does a little better with assigned books for school, but I have to be careful. He refused Redwall last year but loves listening to it on CD. It's all about size of the book for him! He still loves to read picture books and I try to direct him to the living ones that are well written. Suggestion of picture books would be great too!

If you look at Ambleside's list for each level, there is a list recommended supplemental reading, and under that list is one that says something like, "If your child still needs practice...", and they list a lot of really great slimmer volumes.

Just how thick is too thick? I don't remember Secret Graden being too thick, but different editions look so different. We are reading aloud some Elizabeth Enright's books right now, and they are fairly thin. E.B. White is a tremendous author for this level. we got a Tales from the RAF book at Christmas that was well received. Also liked was a new Catholic series Adventures With Sister Philomena.

Does he read graphic novels? My boys devour TinTin, and they really like the Loupio comics as well as the other saints comics from Magnificat and another press I can't recall.

Billy and Blaze are a good series, longer text heavy picture books.

Maybe, too, an ereader would not be so intimidating psychologically? My ds10 reads a ton on his kindle.
