To put it simply, I'm getting overwhelmed looking for classical books for my two oldest to read, now that we're done with the school year. I can really use your help!
I especially need help with my 10 yo son. Many of the books my daughter has read are for the most part for girls. The only one that she has read that I pulled out is Mr. Popper's Penguins. He likes inventions, humor, and adventures.
My 12 yo daughter wants to read The Hunger Games. I haven't had the chance to read it myself, so she needs to wait. I'm considering To Kill A Mockingbird, but would like other ideas.

For your daughter, the Susan Cooper series The Dark Is Rising comes to mind. I have not read it since I was 12 myself but really enjoyed it, and it is gripping without being, well, The Hunger Games.
My son loves Tom Swift and Rick Brant. He has the kindle collections from Amazon. He also really likes a lot of the e-stack books from Bethlehem. If you have a kindle or tablet, they are having their $.99 sale tomorrow! We also think every boy should read Ralph Moody  These options are a little tougher than Mr. Popper.
One of my favorite places to browse is the extra reading on the Ambleside booklists. If you look down below the list, you'll see "easier options" for those not reading at quite the same academic level as the required reading. These get harder as you work your way up but include a lot of the lighter classics that are family favorites here, like My Side of the Mountain.

Thank you, Lindsay! I've never heard of either of the series you mentioned. I do use Ambleside. I fact, much of the reading they do is through Ambleside and Mater Amabilis. But, finding something for my son I find difficult. It just seems to me that much of the literature is for girls.

Lindsay, my son wants to know if he should start with the Tom Swift Sr. Series or Tom Swift Jr. Series?

He has the Tom Swift Megapack. I think we have one or two of the Tom Swift Jr. books around the house. The Tom Swift books came first. Tom Swift Jr. is his son and those books were how they rebranded the series to update in the 50s.
Ds also likes The Rover Boys series, also available for kindle.
I'm not sure what reading level your son is, but if you are looking for classics, my boys like Robert Louis Stevenson and Jules Verne. Audio books are a great way to dip your toe in to get accustomed to the language and detail in these books.

My son also likes the Landmark series for free reading. There are lots of exciting accounts of battles and frontier adventure.
