I have been following the discussion of Swallows and Amazons. I didn't want to hijack that thread but want to ask if it might be the book i am looking for. I am looking for a read aloud to share with dc ( 6 and 7) while visiting Grandma (92) for a few weeks. Or are my dc still a bit young? If so, does anyone have other suggestions?

I think they would be too old.
I would do these titles as a possibility:
Mr. Popper's Penguins
My Father's Dragon and the others in the series
Paddington Bear
Winnie-the-Pooh books
Or maybe Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the Prairie.

I highly recommend My Father's Dragon!!! The Boxcar Children books are also a lot of fun. The first one is OK, but the rest are true gems (filled with adventure and nature study). If your DC are girls, they might like the Little House books. Also, Charlotte's Web is a really good one! Dolphin Adventure is SHORT and you will probably have to read it in one sitting since the kids will NOT let you put it down, but it is my kids' favorite book, hands down!

Thx for the info regarding Swallows and Amazons. I love all the suggestions but we have read all of them! we are in the middle of My Father's Dragon series now and loving it!! Haven't finished all of he Little House books but need a long break from them. Could revisit Pooh but dint think it would hold Grandma's attention. Thanks for trying!!

Have you done Narnia? I had to check what ages mine were.. but my oldest two at 6.5 and 8 (boy and girl) just hung on every word when I read The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe.. they were older for the other books though. And those can be fun for any age to reread.

The Year of Miss Agnes
The historical American Girl book sets. My mom and I had a real hard time reading the Kit books set in the depression because they talked about things that my grammy (her mom) taught us and were very poignant to read. It might be real fun to read with someone who could remember it and perhaps add her own stories?

My mom LOVED LOVED reading THE CHARLOTTE BOOKS to my girls!

Beverly Cleary's "Ramona" books make great read-alouds! They begin when Ramona is quite young, so they work well for K and up.
And, of course, I must put in a plug for my all-time favorite books for girls, the Betsy-Tacy series. The first book, Betsy-Tacy, begins when both girls are five years old. Young girls will enjoy the early books about Betsy, Tacy and Tib - I'd wait to introduce Heaven to Betsy (about her first year of high school) until grade 7 or 8.
