Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Under the Blood Red Sun is one my son read around that age and enjoyed. I can't say personally as a read aloud as I did not read it.

Another one this history loving son read at that age - Burma Rifles (Frank Bonham) - I believe this is recommended in Michael O'Brien's Landscape with Dragons which I don't have access to right now.

Stephen Meader who I love to recommend for history books for that age boy does have two WWII books but they aren't Pacific theater. They are really closer to home US books about the war.
Shadow in the Pines
The Sea Snake

These threads have some of WWII chapter books - there might be a Pacific theater book listed there as well.

WWII for 9 year old
1st WWII book
