My dd's best friend is going to school next year. It's a problem because she just thinks she's going to die of loneliness and, to make it worse, my dh thinks we should consider sending our dd too.   
Anyway! I am trying to think of some things that will help my dd connect a little more with the other girls in our small homeschool group. They are all a bit younger, but it's only a year or two. I was thinking that a book club might be fun, but I'm not sure how to structure it. Has anyone else done something like this?

One of my daughters' homeschooling/ballet friends just started one. We meet once a month and it is a mix of homeschoolers and public schoolers. Each hostess adds more members with the most common tie being our ballet studio. The girls have so much fun and are making more friends every month!
The hostess picks the book and comes up with the discussion questions. The discussion takes 45min-1.5 hours -- depends on how chatty the girls are. They either eat during or after. The last meeting was at my friend's farm. There was a mystery lunch (this required 3 moms to serve) and a scavenger hunt (a hilarious dad and his twin brother did it).
I would definitely recommend setting one up for your daughter and her friends! It is so much fun! My daughters are in 5th & 6th grades. The book club members are 4th-6th grades.

Becky, I'm not sure how I missed this. My oldest dd was part of a girls book club for about a year(recently ended, so these were mostly 10-12yr old girls). The hosting mom actually created a yahoo group called Literate Club, there were about 9 girls in the group, all homeschoolers.
The girls each got a turn in picking a book for the following month. During their monthly meetings they would first dicuss the book, author...and the "book" host would bring a snack to share and eventually the meeting turns into just a playdate. (of course a year is a long time and I'm surprised it lasted that long) My dd is sad that it fizzled out, for various reasons.
My youngest dd just joined something similar for a younger group (mostly second graders). This group is called Canterbury Tales (also has a yahoo group set up). The hosting mom to this group actually leads the meetings and always has something planned. This month they've been sharing poetry and writing poems. She always has a snack at the end of the meeting, but because it is co-ed and the moms are usually there with younger siblings the group ends with snack and doesn't turn into "playdates". (this group is much more chaotic and not as cozy as the Literate Club).
Needless to say: I really like the idea of a book club  . I had a very small one set up in our home when we first started hs so that my dd would still feel connected to her school girl friends. She handmade cards and we were in charge of calling people and reminding them. We met every other week. The group only lasted through the summer, but it was nice for my dd to have the summer to transition.

Thanks v-girl and Jenny. My dd is really excited about the idea of a book club. She's such a social kid, anything that will allow her to talk to her friends is great! I'm not sure I'm organized enough to set up yahoo groups but we'll definitely discuss the books and have snacks!

Our group just sends evites to the meetings. The evite lists the book for the month.

My dd and her friends have organised a book club, they have been meeting for over a year now. Their ages were from 13-18 when they started. They totally organise themselves, one girl (the quietest) hosts, organises, emails, they all contribute to the list, they do include us mothers in emails as a courtesy. At the end of the year they watch a movie. The group is only small 4 to 5. It has drawn these quiet (mostly) girls together.

lovely! I know that a mom/daughter book group has been heavenly for my 'girl (aged 11). She had a friend go to school this year.
We have been doing Beautiful Girlhood (the Karen Andreola reprint). I don't know what we will do after this is over. It's been wonderful to see the girls share on issues of morals and virtue. There are six girls in this group. We meet once a month. I enjoy being with the other moms too. :)
