Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Anyone use these? My son was just gifted with the Primer/Book One (they are in the same book) and he has already read through most of the primer section, and loves the correlating art. I only just found the suggested activities and discussion in the middle of the book.

OLVS - Art-Literature Readers

It looks like right now they only have the first 3, but the book itself says it goes through 8th grade.

I would love to know if others have these and what they think. Would they be worth investing in or asking for the others as gifts? The art IS in black and white, but we can easily look up most of them online for the color version... Other than that I've not had time to dig into it.

Anyone?

My two daughters (grade 1 and 4) use them and really like them. We don't mind the black and white pictures. We bought them used online. We like the mix of biography and work of the authors or artists discussed. The original edition looks very nice. Ours are from 1911 (author Frances Elizabeth Chutter). We only have books Primer-5. Ours don't have discussion questions, though. Maybe OLVS added them later? My girls just read in them for 10 minutes daily.

They've not reprinted past book three.

My third grade daughter also loves them.

We've mostly just used them as additional reading practice (I've collected a number of books for this purpose). I love the selections and biographical sketches chosen for book two and three.

The more my son reads them, the more I love them! He gets to the pages that tell him to look back at a picture and he won't do it, insisting he is only supposed to be reading the words. But if I sit down with him, he'll look everything over and answer the questions. It's really neat.

There is something about holding that beautiful red, gold-embossed version... I saw some older ones on Ebay (books 2 and 5), but they didn't seem as beautiful. With that said, I would SO purchase them if I had the money right now

Do you know if their is any consideration for reprinting the others?

I guess they don't have discussion questions persay, but at the end of the primer and the end of book one there are "highlights" about what/how to discuss each group of pictures. Something like that.

I wonder what the difference in the authors is about? Is it not the same words?

The original material in the primer& Book one was written by Eulalie Osgood Grover and Frances E. Chutter wrote the original material for the rest of the series.

Interesting to know about the authors

As he continues to proceed through this one, I think I'll be adding the rest to gift lists - and I'll have to watch for them on Ebay. We love them and it's getting him looking at other art too (which we DO, but somehow this is igniting that desire even more??).
