I am looking for a new series for my niece. She just finished the Junie B. Jones series and I am looking for another series a step up from this one. Approximate age range 8-12 (something other than American Girl).

Little House on the Prairie Books? there's all the ancestors now too not just the ones about Laura.. Martha and Charlotte and Caroline.
Sarah Plain and Tall is a series of 5 books I think (Skylark, Caleb's Story, Pale as the Moon, and Grandfather's Dance if I'm recalling right - no guarantee on that  )
Narnia
Oh if she's Catholic there's these:

Have you looked at the Royal Diary series? They're fun diairies "written" by royalty before they hit the big time. For instance, Isabel is about Queen Isabel when she is still a princess (15-17 or so) and before she marries Ferdinand ... it's a great look at the political machinations of the time and has great Catholic bits in it too. I'm using these this year for Maggie's "history/geography" -- kind of doing a survey of history from Isabel to Anastasia (so 1466 to 1914) with the geography all over the world ....
Another fun series would be the Betsy-Tacy books .... that's a wonderful series.
Or one I'm pre-reading that I'm loving is the "Shoes" by Noel Streatfield .... Ballet Shoes is fabulous and the next is Theater Shoes which is really great too! There are others but I haven't finished Theater yet.

Aw, I've often wondered if those books were good. Do you remember the scene from You've Got Mail where Meg Ryan is crying in the huge bookstore recommending the books to the woman shopping being "helped" by the employ of said bookstore? Anyway, its one of those times when Meg Ryan is her "cutest"

American Girl also has a mystery series that I hadn't known about until very recently.
My daughter loved The Doll People series. There are 3 books and she at first wouldn't get the 2nd one--skipped to the third --because it's called The Meanest doll in the worldbut finally went back and read it and loved it too.

Cobble Street Cousins
The early Betsy-Tacy books
All of a Kind Family
most of the Beverly Cleary books (esp. Ramona ones)
Sarah, Plain and Tall series
Little House books, and prequels and sequels
American Girl History Mysteries
We are listening to Theater Shoes on audio right now and everyone is enjoying it. We enjoyed Ballet Shoes a few years ago too. I think those books are for a bit stronger readers, however.
