In an effort to trim down some book orders for Fall
I am wondering what your favorite De Paola books are?
Please share your "must" get lists.

Definitely all of his saint and Mary books: Saint Patrick, Francis, Christopher, Mary the Mother of Jesus, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Pascual and the Kitchen Angels. We love his Bill and Pete books and all of his Christmas/Advent books (Clown of God, Old Befana, Country Angel Christmas, etc.), but we borrow most of those from the library. Someday we hope to own them all!

Thank you! I wish we had a public library here- but no such luck! It is a memorial library with ZERO De Paola books- so no previewing for me. I just ordered Saint Francis and Christopher. What about the Strega Nona books? I have Elizabeth's Advent list and see Merry Christmas Strega Nona, but since I've not read it
do we need the others? Are they in sequence or story line?

You don't need the other Strega Nona books in order to use Merry Christmas Strega Nona. The whole series is cute, but you can definitely use just the one independently and add more later if the kids like them.

My kids loved the series about his life. I think the first is 26 Fairmount Ave. I even cried in one of them! It was neat to read them, though, b/c Tomie De Paola is the same age as my parents, so it was neat for my kids to hear about what growing up in the 40's was like.

I love a lot of De Paola's books, but my two absolute favorites are The Clown of God and The Baby Sister. After checking The Baby Sister out of the library again and again during one particular pregnancy, I finally bought it. They are both beautiful, touching books, and I am very glad to own them.
After those, I'd have to recommend the saint books that Janette already mentioned and the chapter books about his childhood that Courtney mentioned.

If Alice had computer access I think she would mention The Holy Twins, about St. Benedict and Scholastica. Particularly applicable with a new Pope Benedict. I'm slowly adding de Paola to our family library and REALLY like this one. Ds (almost 2) enjoys it also...Mommy paraphrases a bit.

Our favorites are Clown of God, Pascual and the Kitchen Angels, Upstairs Nana,Downstairs Nana (I think that's the title). All of his saints books and Advent books are wonderful, too.
One we just read which is not our favorite is Jamie O'Rourke and the Pooka. It's a cute story up until the end, when Jamie does not learn the lesson intended, and I'm afraid our little ones miss the message, too. we've discussed it, but it's going back to the library for now.
About The Holy Twins, I had it on my list from Emmanuel books, since ds 12 will be doing some books on St. Benedict (Citadel of God by deWohl and possibly the MFW book on him as well) this fall. But it says that the Holy Twins is written by someone else, and I guess dePaola illustrated it? Sounds like y'all like it, though, so I'll put it back on. Our library does have a lot of his books including many of the saint books, but I don't think it has this one to preview.

I keep forgetting that The Holy Twins is actually written by Kathleen Norris. If you're evaluating by author, her other stuff is a bit liberal, but this book is quite solid and very thorough summary of his life (and legends) for a picture book. I love de Paola's illustrations -- every page is chock full of symbolism from Benedict's life.

How funny that this post came back up today!
I just got my order in from Amazon. I went to Elizabeth's site and ordered the books for the Advent DePaola unit study! Can't wait to do it with my little ones! I managed to get many of them used for a very low price...low enough that I still saved after shipping and handling. My mom was never able to figure out her Amazon gift card that I got her last year for Christmas and so she sent it back to me when we had baby Naomi! Yippee more books for us!

I was able to pick up a few of the books on Elizabeth's list last week at a booksale. It is so fun to be planning for Advent...we are so looking forward to it!!
I did take Holy Twins out of the library the other week. What a great book! I have that on my list of "must haves".

How fortunate! I want to get those books, too...hopefully before they are out of print, but I'm being good and waiting to get them used for cheap.

I agree! It's so detailed with the symbolism of St. Benedict...every page has his symbols drawn into the background and foreground. And I love how they work in all the "legends" of St. Benedict and Scholastica.

Oh, I just got in the mail today and I had to share. It's called Celebrations Italian Style by Mary Ann Esposito, with illustrations by Tomie dePaola. It's recipes and menus for special occasions and seasons of the year. The author Mary Ann has her own show and website and strives to be authentically Italian...and to share the rich traditions.
What makes this a jewel is there are little stories and tales of Italian traditions, with Tomie's illustrations. There are 4 stories in particular with his little illustrations, and throughout on each chapter page he has illustrated. It's only one color...kind of a red. But the cookbook is full of recipes that are used for religious festivals and feasts. I haven't tried them out yet, but I'm just so excited to find this.
Here's a book review. It's an older book, out of print, but I think it's a good one to add to the library!

Resurrecting an older thread, but I just wanted to add some thoughts. So far, there hasn't been one TdeP book that I haven't liked. And my son, who is only 2, loves them. I don't think he understands yet something by the same artist, but he consistently can point out books by dePaola...calls them "Strega Nona."
The two latest I got from the library are Now One Foot, Now the Other -- what a touching story! Get out your hankies, though! -- and The Art Lesson. The latter presents a really good reason for homeschooling. You can nurture a child's talents without making them be just like the rest of the class!
I love his mention of the 64 Crayola crayons. That was the ultimate...I usually only got 24 crayons. It was a rare gift to get that 64, and to this day the smell of Crayons and reading those names bring warm fuzzies to me!

Hi Jenn,
A friend of ours was able to purchase "The Little Friar Who Flew" for a somewhat reasonable price recently - I think on Ebay. Ordinarily it is quite expensive, as it is out-of-print. I believe it's about St. Joseph of Cupertino. We were able to get it out of our library. I didn't want to fall in love with it too much though, knowing how expensive it is...
