Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Kidspost section of the Washington Post announced the titles of their summer book club and this is one of them. My ds7 is interested in reading some Hardy Boys books, does anyone know anything about this new series?

• Hardy Boys, Undercover Brothers (series) by Franklin W. Dixon
These are not your father's Hardy boys. Brothers Frank and Joe Hardy play extreme sports and battle environmental terrorists. Ages 8 and older

MY 10yo ds is bananas for the Hardy Boys books. I read most of them, myself, as a kid and enjoyed them. They are formulaic but interesting---and if you are doing a unit study, you can usually find a HB that touches on the topic (for example, when we studied the rain forest, Nicholas read "Jungle Pyramid" and "Aztec Warrior"...nice rabbit trails about people of the rain forest (well, the Maya...not the Aztec, but geographically close, anyway). Heading for Kentucky next week, I found a HB that takes place in KY. Planning for Am. Rev. studies, there are several that are mysteries pertaining to that era. Not heavily scholarly, of course, but fun. HBs have been a great hook for my previously timid now VORACIOUS reader.

That being said, the new ones are not so whoopy. Unless I'm hallucinating, I actually skimmed one that had the HB skiing in Switzerland with girl friends... not that there was any lurid detail, but pleaaaaase. These are kids books! Also, my ds's friend, also 10, said he read one of the new ones and they just weren't as good, so that's from the horse's...er...boys' mouths
