I am reading Jane Eyre and really enjoying it. In perusing my library's website, I noticed that there are several dvds of Jane Eyre available:
BBC version produced by John McRae, directed by Joan Craft
National Film Museum Inc. version produced by Frederick Brogger, directed by Delbert Mann.
A&E Home video version, produced by Greg Brenman, directed by Robert Young.
Any suggestion as to which to see? I'm thinking the BBC version should be best, but I thought I'd ask.

Hey Irene!
I am totally partial to the 1944 Orson Wells version, which is hard to find, and not at your library. For me, there is just no other Rochester than Wells. I saw the BBC version a few years ago, and it was OK  , but not as good as the '44 film. I did not buy Timothy Dalton as Mr. R at all  .
There have been so many films of this book! Be warned, though: All film versions are highly abridged. The book is full of name-symbolism, and some of the films leave out a good deal of this.

Just borrowed this last night from my library (thanks, MacBeth!). It was very good. I havent' read Jane Eyre is ages, but even dh enjoyed the movie!
It was so funny to see Agnes Moorehead as Aunt Reed (she was the mother-in-law from "Bewitched!) 
And a stunningly beautiful Elizabeth Taylor as Helen!

Thanks for the input MacBeth. But I am so disappointed that neither my library (thanks for checking!) nor the neighboring county's library system has it.  I checked Blockbuster online, which we are thinking of joining now that they have a minimal membership for $6 per month, but no luck there. Any suggestions for how to get my hands on an old dvd like this without buying it?
And Noreen, I can just picture Agnes Moorehead as Aunt Reed -- she's seems perfect for the part!

Irene,
Maybe this would quelch your desire (at least temporarily  ) to watch Jane Eyre on DVD. Jane Eyre will be on Masterpiece Theatre this Sunday and the following Sunday.
Our library only had the Timothy Dalton one which I didn't mind. However, our library doesn't have the other versions either.
Has any one seen the George C. Scott version?

Hmm, I won't be there since we're expecting freezing weather and the baby is only 3 months old. But my two oldest girls are planning on going with our parish. I just learned that our group has the honor of carrying the March for Life banner at the very front of the line.  (Makes me reeeaaally wish I could go this year!) Trip could possibly find the girls based on their position at the front, but it might be a pain for both him and the girls to carry it around on that day. Maybe it would be easier if I just send you the postage and have you mail it?
