Hi ladies! I wasn't sure where to ask this, but I was wondering if you have any recommendations for the kindle lending library??

My husband just bought me a kindle for my birthday (squeee!!) but none of the books on my current list are showing up in the lending library. I'd love to utilize our prime benefits so we get our money's worth! It's so hard to actually search the lending library!!!

I would love to know more, too, because honestly, we've had Kindles for the last year, and still haven't really figured this out. So far the rule seems to be that no book you would ever want to read is available for lending, and every kind of twaddle that you'd rather your kids not waste their time on is.

I love Prime and find it worth the money on many, many levels, but so far the Kindle lending library isn't one of them. Please change my mind about this!

Sorry, that's been my experience, too. I've read a few books that were interesting, but they don't change up the selection often enough to keep up with, well, my personal tastes.

We love our Kindles, though. There are so many free public-domain books, and so many almost-free selections, in the regular store that I have felt that the devices have paid for themselves many times over already.

I've just been having fun with Many Books, downloading all kinds of cool stuff for the kids (E. Nesbit, old mystery and adventure series, etc) and using my "Send to Kindle" app to upload them onto the kids' Kindles. I haven't looked for many things for myself yet -- I don't actually have a Kindle device myself, just the app on my laptop, which I don't use that much. Everything at Many Books is in the public domain, so no up-to-the-minute reads, but the selection is huge, and it's all free. That more than makes up for the shortcomings of the Kindle Lending Library, in my view (in terms of making me glad we have Kindles, anyway!).

The only one I've ever found (which actually is a fantastic book) is Olivia and the Little Way which is what my daughter gave all her friends when they turned 10 or 11 with a St. Therese chaplet she had made.

ETA--the only way I knew it could be loaned for free was because I saw it while buying another copy for a birthday present. I have no idea how to find a good book searching for one though!

Project Gutenberg has thousands of free public domain books. I also get books from the MobileRead forums, b/c the people there are really good about fixing formatting stuff, etc before uploading. you can also sign up for Kindle's daily deals, which has some freebies and some cheaper books, and Pixel of Ink, and Books on the Knob are places which direct you to free books.

If your library has Overdrive you can get a lot of the books in Kindle format there.
