Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

AOL had a ten page preview of The Notebook Girls, a communal journal written by four high school girls in New York City. Sure made me think twice about how difficult teenaged boys are . The language is appalling. The experiences are appalling. The culture is appalling. And it's "reality" literature.

Couple this with a note from the basketball coach of ds-13 (he's the oldest kid on the team by far). We asked why they weren't playing a weekend basketball tournament and the coach replied that "at this age, it's very important to give priority to their relationships with girls. There is a party this weekend that five of the boys wanted to attend." Sigh..we're looking for a new team.

What??? They're missing a game for a party?? Boy, if I had been on that team, I would have been pretty upset to miss a game for that. I guess I wasn't a "normal" kid but it is sooo sad to see the "adult" lives being pushed on kids at earlier and earlier ages. And of course, we all know what goes on at 13 yr old parties. Its so hard to keep them innocent for as long as possible.

Book: Yuck!

Coach: DOUBLE Yuck! (At least you don't have to buy a book but do we have to interview our coaches now?)

I will pray for you to find a great new team.

Oooh, I really like how winning debates and getting cut from teams are given equal footing with smoking, drinking and experiments with s*x. And don't even get me started on what that last is code for today.

Avoid the Gossip Girls series as well, as this sounds like a carbon copy of that.

Elizabeth, I am grateful you posted this warning as The Notebook Girls looks too, too similar to a book I pull from our library to try and inspire dd's journalling - Amelia's Are-We-There-Yet Longest Ever Car Trip. From the innocence of Amelia to the XXX of The Notebook Girls, all in the same wrappings, sitting on open shelves near each other, how very sad.
