Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

May I add that my ds has begged me for years to read LOTR with him. His dad has already done so. Well this year I gave in to listening to _The Hobbit_ on tape. It has been a labor of love. This is not for me...

But I did enjoy the LOTR movies. Does that count? A little...something...

I have to admit that every time I've tried to read it -- my brothers were BIG fans and now my 16yos is an even bigger JRR nut -- I just can't get into it. Hobbit I can do -- have read that many times. But JRR -- forget it!

Ditto. And, I mostly enjoyed the romantic parts and the very handsome lead (can't even think of his name, but the one who turns out to be the king - see how much of a fan I am!) I thought the romance wasn't as much a part of books, so what's the point!

Viggo Mortensen

and the poll needs another choice: "Yes, I have read the trilogy several times!"

I haven't read it but my dh loves the trilogy and my oldest is hooked....just about done with the 3rd book. Guess I'll need to get in on it. I think I'm scared of being bored (or worse yet, not getting it!). I'm not a fan of fantasy and like more life like stories.   Any words of advice to get me hooked?

I read the Hobbit for high school many, many years ago. I think I read the lotr. A few summers ago, I read The Simarillion (sp?). It took me all summer. my 15yodd has read the hobbit, the lotr, seen the movies, can compare the books to the movies and tries to watch every show that any lotr movie stars appear in ( the rating must be appropriate).

Marie,
May I suggest a long car trip and the entire trilogy on tape???    We crossed the US, from Florida to Wyoming and back, listening to the complete series. I will never forget driving across the Great Plains, in a very deserted, but beautiful part of Nebraska, racing side by side with a freight train (they blowing their whistle, we waving and honking) with the battle of the Treebeards clashing and crashing in the background!
Believe it or not, we actually finished all three books by the time we were on our way back East...and promptly began the tapes all over again!

Read and re-read. We are Tolkien fans, so we've read The Hobbit, Silmarillion, Trilogy, and are off on Unfinished Tales and will then begin the 12 volume History of Middle Earth! Eventually we'll hit the non-middle earth related works too.

Wow Kelly, that's the way to read it!

Wasn't it voted the greatest piece of literature of the 19th century? If it was it was very well deserved and it speaks volumes considering the last century's 'claim to fame' can't be one of holding up all things that are of beauty and truth.

For Catholics in particular we should hold our head's up proudly - Tolkein being a devout Catholic and a daily Mass attendent, also due to the fact Catholic symbolism permeates this book.

We have emersed ourselves here in all that is LOTR-ish and we use it to re-enforce different truths of our faith/devotions and I was delighted to see Helen in her Castle of the Immaculate Family Prayer (move down to the posting "The Rosary stands in a league of its own") also using this book to explain the practise of particular devotions.

One book I recommend as a follow-on from LOTR, which I have just recently finished reading is J.R.R. Tolkien's Sanctifying Myth - Understanding Middle-earth. You walk away with a deeper appreciation of just what that man gave the world - to Catholics and all who love what is good and noble.
