Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What have you read so far?

We have a Trappist monastery nearby - in the town Brian and I grew up in. Their bookshop is loaded with Thomas Merton Titles.

He's quite an interesting person. I love that his Abbot insisted that he write. So un-Cistercian at the time he entered Gethsemane...

Blessings,

I remember reading his autobiography, Seven Storey Mountain, and being very moved. So I did a little rabbit trail and found that a Catholic should really use caution when reading through Merton. In his later life he started venturing into Eastern religions and mysticism.

Can You Trust Thomas Merton? This article reiterates what I had learned about Merton, but does give a list of recommended reading.

The Several-Storied Merton

Three American Sophomores: the Restlessness of Thomas Merton, J. D. Salinger & Jack Kerouac

Thanks Jenn . I am in good aurthority for discernment etc.
I know of Thomas Mertons closeness with the Dali Lama etc.
There are groups who beleive he and Momma T are not real catholics in the end it is between them and Jesus not us to label .
Not all catholics are roman catholic or european catholic culturly but many cultures are orthodox catholic in thier religion .My church drums during mass instaed of having an organ or piano we are aboriginal catholic not european catholic church
There are people here on this group who 10 yrs ago were capable of and did shun others for reading waldorf or using a gentle lovely currciulum like oakmeadow
I also read tons of Kerouac .He was a very lost soul . Many searching souls are drawn to other lost souls it does not make anyone less catholic or least catholic
One author I loved was Catherine Cookson she was very lost for many yrs then near her passing I think in her 90's maybe she found her way again . I still pray for her but she did much healing before passing .
I do read books on wicca etc. now and am safe but this is between me and my spritual director my work etc.
many who are lost do not know they are searching and the danger etc.
I pray for Jack Kerouac often his soul was very very sad but he is still a catholic it just took his soul passing from the physical for him to heal .This is what I mean when I tell people who were once lost .It is a great responsiblity now for them to pray for those souls He placed in our path I also pray for Mel Gibson and that fellow who made the movie bella .
Thanks for the caution it is always best to caution ask others to be prudent I'm going to stick with the choosing to love the world book for now and then maybe try the seven story mountain . I don't want anything to heavy right now as I'm praparing for another round of contemplation
Thanks so much . Your Sister in Christ , Roxie
