I have a hard time choosing fiction for myself-- can you help me make a booklist for the coming year...not for my kids, but for myself?

What is your favorite

1. modern fiction title?

2. classic fiction title?

3. play?

4. easy reading? (because we all enjoy a little twaddle sometimes!)

I'll start:

1. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

2. Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell

3. Hamlet by Shakespeare, of course

4. Seasons Under Heaven by Beverly LaHaye and Terri Blackstock. Acutally, the whole series is lovely.

Great thread! Now, I have to preface with, these are my favorites that come to mind right off the top of my head, probably not lifetime favorites.

1. World Made By Hand by James Howard Kunstler

2. Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy by Sigrid Undset

3. Oedipus cycle by Sophocles (I don't read many plays--but I remember enjoying this a lot...in high school)

4. Next by Michael Crichton

my choices are going to sounds so silly....

1. modern fiction title?
I am not sure how to answer this as I am guessing most of my choices are going to fall under Easy Reading. But I guess I will say, almost anything by Charles de Lint.


2. classic fiction title?
Pride & Prejudice, or most anything by Austen...


3. play?
I don't think I have read many plays in my life....(besides Shakespeare) I think the only plays I have ever read are the Glass Menagerie, Death of a Salesman, and The Crucible...and that is it. Can't say I loved any of them, though the Crucible wasn't horrible.


4. easy reading? (because we all enjoy a little twaddle sometimes!)
the Inkheart series, Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl series,....I happen to like kid's lit, I guess....

1. I love anything by Michael O'Brien, especially Father Elijah.

2. any Jane Austen. Or the Anne of Green Gables series.

3. I really haven't read many plays in my life, and can't say I really loved any of them, but I did enjoy The Merchant of Venice.

4. I inherited my father's love of Tom Clancy novels.

Like MacBeth, a whole lot of my reading is non-fiction.In fact, I would venture to say 90 percent of it is for me.I love natural history and travel books the most, though I can go for a good biography or historical book too.

This is one of those books you have to stick with for it to get good. But it really is worth it. Excellent book.

Dry?? No!!!

I guess it might be a matter of taste. I was hooked in the very first scene, but I was 15, like the protagonist, when I read the book for the first time. My older three have all read and loved it, too. I still find it quite lush and fascinating.

1. The Kite Runner (does have language though, and can be hard to read, but I loved the story!)

I'm with Sally on this. And I cannot limit myself to only one per category, I'm afraid.

1. In this House of Brede and Five for Sorrow, Ten for Joy (both by Rumer Godden)
2. Most anything by Jane Austen, Jane Eyre, A Girl of the Limberlost by Gene Stratton-Porter (a new favorite!)
