Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The Holy Water

These are the two books that I brought with me to the hospital when I had Naomi. What a perfect combination!
Please Don't Drink the Holy Water was a quick read that had me laughing! I tend to be sarcastic and she was very sarcastic and so it was hilarious to me! She managed to make even serious issues come off as funny.

I am well into Real Learning now and I had forgotten how inspiring it is. It is like food for the soul! It amazes me how a good book can be read again and again and each time you walk away from it inspired and recharged! I really need to make time for "Mother Culture" as CM calls it.

Elizabeth, do you ever have to re-read your own book?
Seriously though, how do you all recharge?

As I mentioned before we use MODG. I am not complaining...it is a fantastic program and very CMish, but sometimes I wish we could just follow those bunny trails of learning with lots of good books, narrations, etc.... I have yet to do it, but it's coming. I've belonged to CM groups on and off for well over 6 years now....it's slow in coming, but it's coming!

I was cracking up late last spring as I read Please Don't Drink the Holy Water. I was suprised it was in our library system!

I keep some "pick me up" books by my bedside so I can be encouraged before bed. I am hoping all these spiritual authors will work on my pysche as I sleep!

I could read Elizabeth's book daily and still focus on something new I never thought about or reflected on previously.

I'm looking for some new titles as fall and winter approach and bedtime becomes earlier for me. I'm hoping some others have suggestions for us all, Laura!

Congratulations on your newest addition.

Dear Laura,
Thank you for the kind words . I do have to re-read. I have Willa's long quote on pages 28-29 memorized, I think. And I know Lissa's foreword by too. So much of the book is the wisdom of other people. When I re-read, I reconnect with dear friends. Those quotes are in there because they were important to me when they were first written and they do endure the test of time. Sometimes, it's fun to re-read to see how things have changed. Two of my children weren't even born when the book was written. My oldest was ten--he'll be seventeen this month. Life has marched on and we keep learning. Lately, it's fun to re-read just to remember--and honestly, to remind myself of what the ideal was then. That ideal is enduring and I still want the same things for my family.

I just bought Please Don't Drink the Holy Water... and it was such a laugh! I really did enjoy it .
I have been thinking about re-reading Real Learning recently... of course, I usually think about it when I am in the midst of all these other things to do... but rest assured it is on my 'to-do' list

Jennifer,

I don't see a sequel anytime soon. Life is very different than when I wrote the first time. For instance, the friend I traded babysitting with in order to write now has four siblings to go with the little guy who welcomed my kids last time ! And, honestly, Real Learning hasn't sold all that well. There are some pretty major catalogs that don't carry it..I don't know that it has that much widespread appeal. It just captures our little corner of the world.

There is a book project in the works, sort of...years and years of columns are in the capable and talented hands of an editor near and dear to me. I'll let you know when she has a market-ready product. In the meantime, please pray for her!

That is such a pity and yet sadly so true. People give blank stares when I refer to this book. I get a little more if I say it's sort of Charlotte Mason with a Catholic twist. As some have said, thank goodness for the internet otherwise I would have thought I was the only one out there with that kind of mindset. Regardless, I hope to gleam enough so that when my 3-year-old turns a teenager, I can continue Real Learning.

I completely agree. What sparked me so much about this book is that it revealed a way to break away from the schooling I had had as a kid and let learning be more hands on. From the beginning I have been anti-workbook, and Elizabeth showed me a way to avoid them!

Tonight I've been trying to remember "real learning" experiences from school. I have 2. Making butter in Kindergarten and reading a story called "Mexicali soup" that my mom sort of built on at home. Two in 12 years! So sad.

I was given Don't Drink the Holy Water and My Cup of Tea at the same time. From my friend's desciption I fully expected to enjoy DDHW much more, but in the end I found that I preferred Danielle Bean's more gentle style. My husband has liked it too. Now if I can just convince him to read Real Learning....

This is GREAT news! There are many who have waited years for this one, so I guess we can wait a little longer .

I'll definitely be praying for your editor..
