Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I wrote about this issue on my blog a few days ago.

I'd really like to know what all of you were taught growing up, versus what you know now.

Thanks!

I was taught that the Immaculate Conception refers to Mary's being conceived. The Feast is December 8; we celebrate the birth of Mary on September 8. The Birth of Jesus, celebrated on December 25, is preceded by the Annunciation to Mary on March 25. This is the Virgin Birth (Mary, a virgin, gave birth to Jesus).

I think a lot of the confusion comes from the Gospel reading on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The reading is Luke's account of the Annunciation. I'm sure the reason for this being the Gospel is because it directs us to the reason that Mary was conceived without original sin, but what we hear each year on Immaculate Conception is the story of how the birth of Jesus came about. That connection is reinforced, and what sticks in our minds is that the Immaculate Conception is when we talk about Jesus being conceived in Mary's womb.

Does that make sense? Just my opinion, so it is definitely open to correction.

Peace,
Nancy

I agree with Nancy...I think this is the primary reason for a lot of the confusion.
I've always known what the Immaculate Conception was, but I don't ever remember being taught that. I don't ever remember being surprised to find out what the real meaning of the feast is.

I know I was taught correctly (my mom is never wrong -- she inculcated me with that mantra well!)

But ditto all the comments above. I can remember as a child just having to think twice because of the Gospel and also because Dec. 8th and Christmas are so close together -- I couldn't get Jesus' birth out of my head! It took a while for me to get that 9 month thing down (even though I was the oldest of 7!!)

I do find it odd that there are so many people, Catholics included, who were taught (or at least that's how we remember it!) that it had to do with Jesus's birth and not Mary's. Thanks for all of your comments!
