Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone have any recommendations or family favorites for religious books for children? I am always looking to add to our collection.
We just bought Angel in the Waterswhich we all really enjoy at bedtime.

Thanks! God bless.

The Weight of a Mass by Josephine Nobisso is a "must have."

Tomie de Paola books such as "Clown of God," "The Holy Twins," and "Patrick, Patron of Ireland."

Sixty Saints for Girls

Sixty Saints for Boys

Song of the Swallows by Leo Pollitti

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (an allegory) by C.S. Lewis

For the very young:

The Treasure Box Books

Leading the Little Ones to Mary

Prayer for a Child by Rachel Field

What age range are you looking for?

Any age. I am just curious about good religious books to buy for our home and for gifts.

Thank you for the suggestions! I do have The Weight of the Mass on order from CHC.

Alice suggested most of the ones I know. I can only think of 3 more to add:

Once upon a Saint and More Once Upon a Saint Stories

I am not Marybeth, but I'm curious what people would recommend for a 3 year old.

Alice's list is great -- I second it!

I read to the girls (ages 11, 8, almost-3) daily from Saints for Young Readers for Every Day.

My little one loves Just Like Mary and Little Acts of Grace.

A couple of years ago, my older girls loved The Little Girls Bible Storybook for Mothers and Daughters. We read it together every day (that way I could correct any inconsistencies as it's a Protestant Bible.)

The Narnia Chronicles are wonderful read-alouds for all ages.

All of my girls have liked the God Loves Me Bible. Kate (2) currently likes it a lot but even my 8 yo still likes to read through it.

All the kids love the $1.50 picture books from Leaflet Missal. They have books on saints, Mary, the Mass, sacraments. Lots of good stuff.

For my older girls, a book on purity called

The Princess and the Kiss was a hit.

That's all that comes to mind right now -- I know there are more ....

Some we have enjoyed recently and I highly recommend...

Brigid's Cloak by Bryce Milligan
The Very First Easter, Paul Maier
Katie, The Young Life of Katharine Drexel
Saint Ciaran
Saint Kevin
(can't find these two at the moment to tell you the authors)

Try Whippersnapper Books for some beautiful Catholic children's books.

I also like the little books from St. Joseph Communications. I have about fifty of them and my little people bring the picture missal to Mass.

I also second the recommendation for Leading the Little Ones to Mary and Just Like Mary.

I have a beautiful picture book called The Story of Mary the Mother of God by Dorrie Papademetriou.

The illustrations are great. The author was inspired by the mosaic icons of a monastery in Turkey. The story includes some interesting events that are recorded in the apocryphal gospel of St. James. It's really a very reverent and beautiful book for ages 3-9.

How could I have forgotten If Jesus Came to My House by Joan Gale Thomas? It's a classic.

The Miracle of St. Nicholas by Gloria Whelan is also great and not overly Christmas-y if you would like to read it now.

The Holy Twins is the story of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica, twin saints. It makes an especially good read aloud given our new Pope's choice of name.

I just got the Stories of the Saints, Volumes I- IV from Catholic Heritage Curriculum. They are part of their reading curriculum, but they make great stories of the saints to read or to read alond just by themselves!
