Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My baby is due a few weeks before Lent begins. Has anyone ever had their child baptised during the Lenten Season? There seems to be some confusion on if Baptism is preformed during this Holy Season.

My 13 yo ds was born on Ash Wednesday and baptized on Easter. It was lovely to have it done on Easter, but a long wait. If you are due before, maybe you could squeeze it in before Lent? What does your priest say?

At our parish there are no baptisms during Lent. I was surprised by that.

There are no prohibitions against baptism during Lent or Advent.

Our baby will come about the end of December (unless God has other plans), but we have to wait four weeks until the end of January for Baptism because our parish doesn't baptise in December.   If someone's child is born the end of Nov, then they would have to wait eight weeks.

Here's an apologist's answer from Catholic Answers:

Why won't my church baptize during Lent?

Michaela,

Thank you for that link. I just emailed my priest, hoping he just says yes. If not, I will use the information you provided. I also have a call into my Diocese.

One of my children was baptized during Lent. I would have had it done sooner but we all had the flu. Rather than wait until Lent was over, our priest agreed to have the baptism then.

I've lived in 2 parishes that didn't baptize during Lent. My son was born in December, I got mono on New Year's and was down for 4-6 weeks, then it was Lent! He was baptized April 5. But honestly, I was so sick & then so busy with new baby, it didn't seem all that long.

My oldest daughter was born in February and was baptized after Easter, in May.

I'm going to read that link now that had the answer to "why?"

I just heard from my priest and he said that it is not customary, but permitted!    I would need to have our Deacon do the ceremony. This is good news!!! Thank you all for the information you've provided.

Jennifer,
So glad to hear that your baby's baptism can take place during Lent! I was going to say, three of my four have been baptized during Lent! That's just when their birthdays fall. I think our church keeps doing them during Lent because they would have such a large number to baptise if they waited until after Easter. Between birthdays and baptism days, our Lent is a little more celebratory than it should be

I just heard from the Diocese and the only day that we are not permitted to baptise is at the Eater Vigil Mass. Baptism is a time of birth and the Eater Vigil is about Our Lord's death. Other than that, all Sunday's are permitted. If one can wait to baptise on Easter, that is the most prefered time, but not necesary.

I don't get this....aren't all un-baptized RCIA candidates baptized at the Easter Vigil? Why not infants?

That's what I thought. Actually, two of my children were baptized (as infants) at the Easter Vigil Mass.

It may change from Diocese to Diocese. Then it changes from Parish to Parish! This is what I am finding out with some issues.

So happy for you!

I had two babies during Lent. The first child was baptized on the Feast of Divine Mercy that year and the other child was baptized on Easter in the year she was born.

God gave us special Feast days for our children's baptisms, come to think of it. The 3rd child was baptized on the Feast of the Holy Family and sweet Joseph Maximillian on our 5th wedding anniversary which is the Feast of St. Blase!

Sorry to digress....
