Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We do Epiphany in a big way here, and I've seen something in many catalogs this year that I'm itching to buy for an addition to our celebration: Gifts of the Magi. I've seen it in all ranges of prices, but I'm wondering if anyone has seen it for less than $30, maybe $25? Is that asking too much?

Then again, I just saw this from Met Museum of Art and it seems rather nice, too!

Jenn, my budget couldn't handle the other two but I sure do like this book. Does anyone have it? Is it as beautiful as it sounds?

Thanks for any input (and to Jenn for helping me spend my monthly budget )

CBD has the small one box set for $29.99.

http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/easy_find?Ntk=k eywords&Ntt=Three+Kings+Gift+Set&action=Search&N=0&Ne=0&even t=ESRCN&nav_search=1&cms=1&Go.x=8&Go.y=13

I checked out the Met Museum of Art one in the Catholic Shop last week. I was not over impressed with the book.

I think I will go with the 29.99 one. I am still making my Advent/Christmas/Epiphany purchasing list.

If you can tell, I've been mulling this over for a while. Here's another option I've been trying to decide. Anyone do this [url-http://www.monasterygreetings.com/Products.asp?PCID=9]Home Incense Kit[/url] And below are Frankincense and Myrrh candles...

National Geographic has another Gift of Kings

I found the source of all the gifts I posted originally here and found for sale at Magi-Gifts and now I understand the price differences, as there are different sizes.

It's such a lovely idea...but as usual I'm wondering if I could make or put together something similar.

I love it too, Jenn, but, like you, I'm also picturing all those small wooden hinged craft store boxes (for 99 cents and less) just waiting to be decorated and filled. This would make a great project for the 12 Days of Christmas!

Funny, when I read your first message earlier tonight, candles is what I thought of first. Earlier this year I decided that I would make some myrrh and frankincense candles for Christmas this year. We haven't done it yet, but still plan to. I think there was an earlier thread (this spring) where we talked about making the liturgical feasts come alive for all the senses. So many ideas we talk about are related to sight, hearing, and taste that I had thought of candles (or incense) as a great way to make present the smells that could be associated with a feast or celebration.

Putting something like this together would be really easy to do for less than most of those options for sale. Alice's idea of decorating a craft box for the holder is wonderful. In those linked sets it looks like the gold is just gold leaf flakes - easily available from craft stores. There are several sources for small amounts of frankincense and myrrh resin which is what they have in the sets. Or an alternative would be to get myrrh essential oil which I believe would be more symbolic of the myrrh gift brought to the Christ child - an ointment or oil. Various bottles or tins could be used to hold the items for placement in the decorated box.

So now you have my wheels spinning. I'm thinking this would be a great support group activity to put something like this together for each family to take home.

Jenn and Alice, thank you for the wonderful idea!

I was googling this morning (as usual) and found frankincense and myrrh resin at herbalists and aromatherapists. Anywhere from $2.50 for a little bag to about $20. So all that's really left to find are the gold nuggets. You can find nuggets from Australia but I don't know if these are online scams or not. Any suggestions? One site offered a real gold cross (small) instead of nuggets....

As for the craft box, it can be painted, but I was thinking something really luxurious like purple or red velvet, with gold trimmings....

Question: when would you do this? After Christmas, or after New Year?

Great inspiration on ways to make this yourself. This week A.C. Moore has some unpainted "treasure boxes" on sale.

MaryM, when you add scent to your candles, what are you using? I've smelled some pretty raunchy candles, and am nervous about getting something that won't keep the scent or turn "old" fast.

Stef, is your question related to when would I craft these, or use them? I'd start this now, or in Advent, so it will be done before Epiphany.

On Epiphany Sunday or near that day we have the 3 kings and a priest come for the House blessing...our plans are lined up every year for a very special priest who loves this tradition, and my extended family all join together for this.

In the past we have had the grown men play the role as the kings, but now that the kids are older, I want to have the tangible to get them involved in making crowns, wearing capes and presenting the gifts, too. We'll have more than 3 kings. If I buy the incense, that gives another child in doing something.

I'm also mulling over an idea of progressive party, so that all involved can have their houses blessed. But that's another question and another thread, I'm sure.

I use the candle fragrances from this company - Peak Candles, mostly because it is local and I don't have to pay shipping. But I do like their scent products and have been very pleased with the outcome - they seem to last long and keep the scent. Unfortunately they don't have a frankincense or myrrh fragrance so I'm going to have to look to one of the other candle supply sites. I do think the specific candle companies have better product that the line they carry in most of the local craft stores.
