Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Could someone tell me a little more about them? I was looking through the little library in our Church basement and most of the books there are from them. I have not heard of them before and did not really recognize the authors. Then when we were leaving Mass I saw a little display with books we could purchase and most of the books there were Paulist Press as well.

I don't want to read anything questionable......

thanks so much!

I don't know much, but when I showed up with a book from Paulist Press, my (extremely orthodox) DH told me to be careful. Upon reading the book...I can see why. It was a little off in some places. I went to the University of Texas where the Paulist priests were in charge and there were a lot of questionable things that went on... I'll be interested to see if anyone knows anything more!

The Paulists were founded by Fr. Hecker, who felt that vows would get in the way of religious relating to the world. I believe they were the first and only religious community in the Church to not take vows. The community was founded only with some underhanded tricks so that the Vatican would approve. The Paulists have big problems with orthodoxy. Paulist Press publishes a lot of very unorthodox books by authors like Charles Curran who is not allowed to teach at Catholic schools. They seem not to only select bad writings because they actually publish some good stuff too. (One of my favorite books is published by them)

Basically, use extreme caution when reading a book by this publisher. If you know the author is orthodox then don't worry, but if not, I wouldn't bother with it.

I hope this helps!

God bless,
Patrick

P.S.
Andrea, I would suggest you write a letter to Bishop Gregory and tell him about some of your experiences. I know some people have already complained to him, but more can only help. I'm an Aggie and it's hard to believe that just down the road in the same diocese we have such chaos.

Once again Patrick, Thank you! I was looking through the libray and it seems to be a 25-75% mix of solid-questionable books in there. Looks like a revamping of the library could be a task to volunteer for when I have some free time!! I have a feeling that only a few of these will be solid authors. I didn't see any Curran books in our library and he is the only one I would have recognized as being wacky...do you know anywhere that I can do a "search" on these books and get the real scoop? When I google them, I seem to only get retail sites...

Thanks for the insight!

I think that's just something you have to investigate one book at a time. I wish I could help more with that.
