Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Can someone explain to me if there is a connection between these two? I am thinking something like St. George is the earthly representation of Michael, but I can't remember all the details. (Or if this is even true! I may be completely confused!) Thanks for any information.

Well, there is a connection. But George is different. He was definitely a person, soldier and martyr. But the legends that have arisen about him may not necessarily be true (such as the dragon).

The Catholic Church examined the saints on the Roman Calendar and revised the calendar in 1965 (I think). Some saints were removed because their existence couldn't be completely proven by historical facts -- Christopher's demotion is the most well-known. But George stays on the Calendar for April 23.

As far as similiarities with St. Michael, they are both dragon slayers, both soldiers. They are both patrons to England, soldiers, and knights.

Read a few of the Legends connected to both the archangel and St. George.

Now to mix you up even more, there are many similarities to St. Martin of Tours who is in November and St. George.

Thanks, Jenn!

I think I know where I was getting the connection - all those British festival books we love! I've been looking through them for Michaelmas ideas and came across these quotes:

From All Year Round:

"In the circle of the year, the Day of St, George and the Feast of St. Michael and all Angels (September 29th) stand opposite one another. In many ways we can see how George's reputation as a courageous knight and champion of the oppressed, steadfast in truth, holds up an earthly mirror to the warrior Archangel who fought the great dragon in heaven (Revelations 12)."

And from Family, Festivals and Food:

"Because of the strong good vs. evil theme in this heritage, the story of a familiar figure, St. George and the dragon, is appropriate at Michaelmas"

I knew there was a reason we always pull out St. George and the Dragon this time of year, but I hadn't really thought about it!
