Question for Moms whose kiddos have gone through Confirmation: how much did your parish require your child to be involved in formal religious education before they received the sacrament?
Were you able to do most of the preparation at home as part of your curriculum?
Pros and Cons of at home vs. in a classroom setting?

We did it all at home. No papers, retreats etc.
Just Like home schooling anything, there is always the nagging question, did we miss something. With my next batch I will do the same but maybe add the Chosen dvd's. I have heard they are inspiring.

So I gather there was no problem with that? No flack from the DRE or priest?
Our church is big, with very few homeschooling families and I'm wondering if my preferring to do it at home will be met with any resistance...

Our first parish would have told us "No" for home prep. They would have required us to go to the weekly classes filled with teens who don't really want to be there and to the ungodly "retreat" held at a waterpark (of all the places to insure purity is harmed!) with a full rock and roll concert on one of the nights. Yes, sounds like a great way to prepare a soul to put on the armor of God?!?! I am so glad we got out of that circus before my oldest and my husband made their confirmations.
Then we switched to the TLM, and the priests there did weekly classes from the Baltimore Catechism. The retreat was a real one, at the church, that was centered on Mass and confession and a spiritual conference directed toward personal holiness. We also worked at home along with all of this using the "Preparation for Confirmation" book that is out there. Very solid. My husband looks back fondly on this, feels he really got the best preperation that was available.

My parish requires attending a short sacramental preparation course (about 8 or so classes, helping clean the church for Easter and a retreat).
It briefly covers the essentials (and pretty much only the essentials) as it is expected that the children will have recieved a proper grounding at school and/or home. Due to the numbers of children receiving sacraments (about 100 for FHC and 90 for confirmation this year) vs the number of volunteers plus space and time restrictions, the parish really can't do more.
I do think that becoming more involved with the parish is an important part of Confirmation preparation (see CCC 1309) so I would not avoid putting my children into the parish classes without serious reason.

No we did not receive flack but there are many homeschoolers who have gone before. If I had received trouble, I would have sat down with our pastor and explained why I wanted to do this at home and what materials I was using. If need be, I would have also explained that many of the kids who go to re don't want to be there and negatively affect those who are less worldly. I have found that once you establish that one on one, it usually goes smoother.

The difference in the parish sacramental prep. groups between our Ordinary form and the Extraordinary form were night and day. The EF children were for the most part serious and trying their best. I had also gone to RCIA at the ordinary form parish and it was a joke. So, I was not going to put my children in the classes. I think if you are fine with your parish, there should be not problem. If you are ok with what you are getting and there is no funny business (required water park and rock and roll retreats mandated by the diocese) or outright heresy, the children will be fine.
Another blessing we have had in our TLM confirmations was to have my daughter be confirmed by Cardinal Burke!

I have also noticed that TLM confirms younger typically. That is helpful too.

Fwiw, I know many families who normally attend the Ordinary Form of the mass who had their children confirmed at the EF form of the mass. However, our parish does not offer confirmation every year, so there is often a range of ages being confirmed.

I heard back from the DRE and am pleased with our arrangement. My son can do the bulk of preparation at home, just as we have been. There are 4 mini retreats in the month leading up to the actual Sacrament which he is required to attend. They are one day each and will be held at our church. She welcomed my help and involvement. She also said they have classes one evening a week starting in August which he is welcome to attend if he wishes (we'll see, as I've heard that lots of the kids in these classes spend a lot of time goofing off).
