Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Yesterday we celebrated St. Joseph's Feast Day, just like we do every year. I gathered my meager selection of books (My Nameday, Song of the Swallows and The Childhood of Jesus), we prayed and sang, made cream puffs, and colored pictures of St. Joseph, but the whole time, I kept thinking "if only we had some more picture books!" Anybody have any favorite St. Joseph picture books? Or any other St. Joseph feast day traditions? (sorry, I can't figure out how to put in a link for the books!)

We have enjoyed Good Saint Joseph by Fr. Lovasik. And it's super cheap, too !

One tradition we love to do, but couldn't this year since all our stuff is still in a truck traveling cross-country , is to make a simple St. Joseph altar. I posted about that here. FYI, the cannoli cake was more work than it was worth...we just stick with cream puffs now!

Many of have lamented this fact before - that there aren't a lot of books available unfortunately. Here are some threads which mention a few more:

St. Joseph?
St. Joseph book recommendations

Caroline mentioned the St. Joseph Altar. Our local group has been doing a St. Joseph Altar for several years. It is a wonderful tradition that we love being a part of.

We have a High Mass then an Italian feast afterwards. We have a St Jospehs table where we place all the desserts. We have done candles and flowers int he past, this year it was just the statue, an icon and the desserts.

We do a little "play" where we have 3 children be Mary, Jospeh and Jesus. They go from door to door asking for food and shelter. Children play the people behind the doors. The first 2 say they have none and the 3rd tell them to come in, they have both, and lead them to the table already set for them. Then those children are the first to be able to go through the food line.

We prayed the litany of St Jospeh and a few other prayers as well before eating. We also bring food for the food pantry, since in Italy the custom was to invite the poor to the feast. Here in rural America, the food pantry is a good option to keep that custom alive.
