Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have long disliked this song....especially when it was sung (poorly at that) for Midnight Mass a few years ago!

Marc Shea did a pretty good job answering the question, Mary Did You Know?

I am so with you on your dislike for that song! It has bothered me ever since I heard it and I find it totally inappropriate for use during Mass. Thanks for sharing the article!

Can anyone explain to me the reasoning behind the song? What is the songwriters point? Knowing this is important to me and I can't find anyone to answer this question. Was the songwriter ignorant of theology or is he mocking Mary, or is there actually a good reason?

I always took the song as a reflection on Mary wondering what her child (whom she acknowledged as the Savior) would be like as he grew up. Guess I never read into the exact lyrics too much. I don't think I'd appreciate it in the Liturgy, though.

I went to a Christmas Concert last year put on by the Getty's. During the show the man that wrote the music to the song performed and talked about the song and a little bit about the song writer.

From that witness, for lack of a better word, I feel that the song writer and music writer are very devout Christians. I think they both came from a sincere place and in their heart they are wrestling with the thought of Mary at the Nativity.

My own frustration with the song doesn't stem from their sincerity but the modern Protestant view of Mary. Especially that she was just a girl or "birth canal" as I read on a blog today. Or, that if she had said "no", God would have just found someone else. Or that Mary isn't the Mother of God, but just Jesus's earthly mother and we should only focus on His heavenly Father. Etc....

I hope that helps.
