I see that many people are using The Bible Tells Me So for religion this year.

How are you liking it?

We started using it last week and the kids and I have both learned so much. It is written in a conversational way, which concerned me (I'm more of a bullet point person), but I am actually finding it quite easy to implement.

Anyone care to share their experiences? Tips for using it?

We are into Chap 7 or 8? now and still really enjoying it.

I also thought the conversational tone would be hard for me, but it is surprising how easy it is to work with... the text just rolls along.

Like you, Monica, I am also learning a ton from this book- just so many little things like names ending with "-el" in the Bible usually mean that God has given that person extra authority ( ex. Israel, Samuel). Also, I am enjoying the way the author draws lines between people and events. Abel was killed for no other reason than that he irritated Cain. Jesus- same thing.

There is just so much in this book. The only thing that gets hard for me is that my kids get so wound up with this- laughing and talking about it all- that they can get a little wild. Yesterday the author made a reference to Moses and the twelve bananas (one of his ways to make sure the kids are really paying attention), and my dc were practically rolling on the floor
laughing. It took us awhile to regroup after all the shrieks of "It's not 12 bananas! It's Ten Commandments!" and all the hilarity.

I wanted to add that the Peter Kreeft book "You Can Understand the Bible" that Sunny recommended has been an excellent companion book for me with this program.

The Kreeft chapters are fairly short and just full of even more interesting information for me to share with my kids.

As I said before, we are enjoying this book immensely! However, just today, I came across one pitfall. After a few weeks, we finished a few chapters that covered one book of the Bible. I wished for an easy, quick review page. Even simple bullet points at the end of a section or at the end each chapter would be so great! Maybe I should begin hi-lighting as we read, but that will certainly take away from my wonderful acting!? Yes, I really get into my part of reading as if it is spontaneous!

I, too, wish there were bullet-points at the end of each lesson or book of the Bible. (Actually, this is one of those books that I constantly think about how I would have set it up had I been the writer or editor...)

I end up pre-reading the chapters before we read them together and I underline things I don't want to miss.

I agree that bullet points would be an excellent addition.

You know, we could probably suggest that to the author. I know he has a facebook page. I am not on FB, but a friend of mine came across it and told me it's out there.

The author just draws one, but I found a great one on the inside cover of Fr. Lovasik's Picture Bible.

My drawing skills are not the best, so this worked out really well.

Finally got this book for us to use. I revisited this thread because in perusing it I was worried about the conversational style, but I see that you all had and overcame that same concern.

Any more advice about how you tackle it? Do you just read it aloud? I am thinking that reading once, underlining, and then reading aloud seems the best route.

I try to read it ahead of time, underlining text I want to remember, and then use that information to teach and open a discussion.

The layout of the book could be much better, but the knowledge that we've gained by studying from it is irreplaceable.
