My son is making his First Holy Communion this coming up Saturday. It is an evening mass, and they are having a reception in the Church afterwards.
We are planning a luncheon the following afternoon for family and friends.
My question is this, he is boy number one and I still have 3 more to follow.
Our Church apparently always does this on Mothers Day weekend, which makes for a very small turn out of family and friends to his party.
Does everyone always have the party in that same time frame? Or could I plan it for the following weekend? Would that be wrong?
I have the next one in 2 years and this is just hard to work with.
Thoughts please?

Well, understand that I shift celebrations around all. the. time.
I think that any time after he's received his FHC is an appropriate time to celebrate.
Matter of fact I even allow my girls to wear their dress for another Mass or two afterwards.. we just tone it down a bit, don't wear the veil and all. But they love their pretty dress and I just don't see why they can't wear it another time or two before it's put away. So I would even let his dress up in his nice outfit for the Sunday immediately after and then the next Sunday for those relatives and friends that might come to Mass that day. And have the party afterward.

This makes me feel MUCH better. I was getting pretty upset that I didn't know what I was going to do for the rest of the boys.
It is a shame that aunts and uncles cannot celebrate with him because it already falls on a special day of the year.
Phew.......

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd encourages to not have distractions for the child. The important part of the day is receiving Jesus. Not having a party that day or weekend puts the focus on the reception and interior life of the child, and then the family celebration is an external, celebrated the next day or weekend or whenever.
I think it's nice to prolong it. It's a big deal. My son counted his communions for a long time. "This is my 15th communion....."

With one of mine we had the party a week later at the park. The day of the First Communion we went to lunch with our out-of-town family. It wasn't my "ideal plan," but after the fact I was so glad it all worked out that way. We were able to celebrate and spend time with family we rarely see, and the kids enjoyed their day at the park too. We've done this for Confirmation too when the church hosts a reception.

I found how we are going about it now, horrible. He will be 11 this summer, so yes we waited. He is very excited about receiving for the first time. The party part is such a distraction.
I wish I would have asked sooner! I would have postponed it a little.

We've done most of our receptions immediately after so I know about the prep distractions. There are pros and cons to both ways for sure. It is beautiful that your son is so excited, Jill! I'm praying for a grace-filled weekend for you all.
