So often we leave a blessed vigil candle lit near our Blessed Mother statue for a special intention, and I have always wanted to find a special prayer for that ritual. In preparation for Candlemas this Saturday, I thought it would be a good time to do an online search for a prayer to pray when lighting a vigil candle. I couldn't find anything satisfactory so I made one up using bits of prayers I've found here and there

Just wanted to share with you all in case you were interested!

Jesus, you are the light of the world. I light this vigil candle and ask that you enlighten me in my difficulties and decisions. May it be a refining fire for you to burn out of me pride and selfishness. Set my heart on fire with love for you and let me be consumed in the light and warmth of your love. May I bring your love to my family and all whom you place in my life. Through the prayers of the Blessed Virgin Mary I place into your care those I come to remember, especially ___________.
As the smoke from this candle ascends to the Heavens, so may my prayers continually rise to your throne where I pray they will meet with your mercy and favor. Amen.

Thanks for sharing! I wish I could feel safe keeping candles lit for a longer time like this. But, with my wild cowboys, I don't want to burn down the house! Someday......maybe!

Mary, thank you so much for sharing that beautiful prayer! The timing is perfect! I'm printing your prayer to place beside our prayer intention candle ~ a pegged vigil candle that sits atop a decorative bottle in which we place our prayer intentions. We also have a similar "gratitude" candle where we place prayers of thanksgiving for answered prayers and special blessings received. Thank you again!
