Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The cartoons inside our Sunday bulletin are becoming very distressing. Today we have a man smoking and drinking with a heavy 5 0'clock shadow slouched on the couch in front of the TV while two ladies look on from the background. The caption - "The Resurrection is always an extra-special event for Chuck."

I don't get it. Is it supposed to be funny? Is it supposed to spark thought and conversation? Is this carried nation-wide or just locally? This is not the first but rather like a continuation of bad cartoons. The absolute worst so far had to be right after Easter where a priest and a nun holding hands and a packed suitcase were climbing aboard a bus labeled Catholic Guilt Trips.

I don't even want my daughter to be handed the bulletin when we walk out now and quickly take it away and tuck it in my purse. It just makes me so sad and upset. I'd like to do something, but haven't quite figured out how best to approach this. Any ideas?

I would jusy mention it to your pastor. Does your church do its own bulletin or use a service for it? I'm pretty close to our pastor so I wouldn't hesitate to talk to him .. I know it would be harder if we were in a large parish where it's hard to get to know folks easily. But the bottom line is, you stick to your instincts and let them know how you feel...

I would find it difficult (confrontation - ack!), but I think you should say something. I would talk directly to the pastor, not the staff, as my first recourse. I will pray for you to have the right words and the pastor to really hear.

Dear Jennifer and all,

I couldn't agree more that you must go to your pastor and express your dismay over these cartoons. They are inappropriate, and, chances are, you are not the only one concerned. If he hears from enough distressed parishioners, you may get some results.

Sometimes, a pastor himself may not like something, and he appreciates parishioner support in imposing the change.

Thank you for the advice and prayers, I think you are right, time to talk to the pastor but oh, it would be so much easier to sign some on-line, impersonal, nation-wide petition, wouldn't it? But that doesn't appear to be the place or the way I'm being called to make a stand...

I wanted to post and say that I am very very liberal and often enjoy mildly off colour and slightly irreverant jokes and etc.

And even I think this sort of thing is a) not funny and b) completely inappropriate.

So take heart, if someone like me stands beside you in thinking this is wrong I am sure you are one of MANY in your parish to find these cartoons offensive. I think people will thank you for standing against this.

I don't get it. I mean I really don't understand the joke...

is it syndicated or is it drawn locally?

I don't really know. I've looked on-line for key words in the cartoons and for what I think the scrawled name is - Jonodo, or perhaps Jonado, or maybe Jorodo. There is a large copywrite sign in the middle of the cartoon, a C inside a circle, I mistook it for the wheel on the Guilt Trip bus at first it is so large.

Just a thought...the cartoon is probably not meant to be funny, but, rather, in the great tradition of satirical cartons, is supposed to make a point. Does anyone recognize someone in the cartoon? Don't we all know "Catholics" who celebrate holy days by relaxing at home? Maybe the pastor was trying to get a message across.

I wanted to apologize, I'm afraid I sounded very terse. I actually had a long, flowing, eloquent (!) response that I can't remember at all after dh climbed aboard and dd jumped overboard to try and take pictures of a grouper...you know, life. Everyone's responses help me keep things in perspective, thank you so much for your thoughtfulness!
