Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My oldest son just recieved Confirmation and his grandparents sent him $25. Now I've suggested to him that it's different than birthday money that can be used for anything fun. That it should be used for something special and Catholic.. and since his other grandma is getting him a nice saint medal, and we're getting him a nice rosary.. that perhaps a nice Bible would be a good choice.

So now we're looking at Bibles.

I've had HORRIBLE luck with finding ones that the bindings don't break and the covers pull loose etc. So I'd like to find a good sturdy but flexible bible.. maybe leather covered (though that might be too pricey)

I'd also like it to have a zipper so that the pages are better protected.

Not white. But I'm pretty sure any other darker color would be fine.. black, brown, burgandy, navy etc.

After talking with him, he definately wants a NAB version. Like what's used at Mass (so not the revised edition) He struggles with reading.. may always struggle with it. And the familiarity of hearing it at Mass will help a great deal so we really want that version for him.

And I think the intergral tabs for the books would be very helpful too.

Oh and I was also thinking something that could have his name stamped or engraved on it would be very nice.

DH and I might boost his $25 if we can find what we want.

Any clues on what I'm looking for? Once I know exactly what Bible we're looking for I can hunt up a cheap way to get it.

Jodie, I did find this leather-bound NAB with some nice study aids. Also, it has a magnetic flap that secures around the pages. So, it might be a possibility for you, although I haven't seen it personally. Also, it's not clear whether it has the integral tabs or not.

One suggestion that has worked fantastically for me is to make a cover for the bible out of very sturdy upholstery-type fabric. I was going through a Bible every year..covers just falling off..when a friend of mine made me just such a cover in a lovely green patterned upholstery fabric. It has protected my Bible for years now, and the Bible under the cover still looks almost new. It has a flexible leather binding, which I think in combination with the fabric cover really has made it hold up to a lot of use. The flexible leather cover is a lot more pricey, though.

Another idea is to buy a zippered Bible cover, this way you get the zipper you want plus the protection of the cover. The only Bible I've ever seen with a zipper in the actual binding of the Bible is a compact travel Bible like this RSV version travel Bible. I googled for you, but couldn't find this type of zippered binding the New American Bible. That doesn't mean it's not available, just that it's 5 a.m.! The trouble with a travel Bible is the very small print, which could be a problem, especially if reading is already challenging for him.

Last thought is to call a local Catholic bookstores and have them search one out for you. They have access to a lot of publishers catalogs and might be able to find exactly what you are looking for!

Congratulations on your son's Confirmation! May God bless him and guide him into wisdom and holiness!

Thanks Caroline, a cover is a good idea. We don't have any local Catholic (or Christian) bookstores.. so I'll be searching online. And actually with a cover.. I may have seen a Bible that would work otherwise yesterday when I first was looking around.
