Where were you a year ago today when you heard the news of Pope John Paul II's passing?

We were camping at Toledo Bend State Park with my b-i-l and family. We had just driven back to the campsite from a trip to town and my oldest ds met us at the car to tell us they had announced the sad news.
Ten minutes later, news came that it was a false report. The radio stayed on all afternoon and we did little but sit around the campfire, talking, reading the newspaper, playing cards, pausing when any announcement came on about the pope's condition until we got the official report.
By the time we went to Mass that weekend, the church was already shrouded in black and a wreath was on the front doors.

I was hosting a bridal shower for my brother's fiancee. My dad heard it on the radio. It was kind of strange as some of the guests were quite liberal Catholics and it was hard to gauge their reaction.
I saved my tears for the ride home. It really hit me in Mass the next day when they had his picture on the altar.
As we prayed for him yesterday in Mass (of course, I was thinking we should be praying to him), it really hit home again.

We were in Gettysburg visiting dh's family. We spent most of the weeks preceding on pins and needles, emotional and praying with radio or TV nearby expecting to get the news of his passing any minute.
We were watching some video from this long lost cousin of her trip to Africa...after switching it off, the news came across the screen. It was so upsetting to hold back the emotions and comments, because, like Molly's experience, there was different backgrounds and opinions in the gathering. I had to wait until the car to do my crying.

We were fortunate in the fact that my b-i-l and the friends that join us camping are all Catholic. We were able to go to Mass together the very evening he died.
If it weren't for that, I would have been miserable all week. But I was able to share my grief and thoughts with other Catholics who cared.

We were in PA getting ready for my niece's confirmation - and his day of birth into eternal life is my birthday so it is one date I won't forget.

I was just today talking to my friend who brought me the news. I was sitting at the kitchen table when she told me, but that's all I remember about it. I remember very distinctly the fear and uncertainty of what would happen to us despite the promise that the gates of Hell would not prevail against the Church.
I had lots of Catholic friends to grieve with, but there were comments, not meant to be insensitive, by friends who were ex-Catholic that did hurt. I remember thinking how they just could not understand that this man was at least as dear to me as a parent or grandparent.
I still catch my breath at Mass when we pray for our "new" pope, whom I also love but differently.

I heard the news on the radio when I climbed back into my car to leave the luncheon after my sister-in-law's grandfather's funeral. Literally, I turned on the car and there it was. It was surreal.

My husband, our children and I were visiting his parents who live just north of San Francisco. Before we left their home to drive to Chinatown for a visit, we learned of JP II's passing. I kept thinking to myself, "Of all the places I could be on the day he dies, I'm in Chinatown!"
Well, my husband's parents are fallen-away Catholics and had not been into a Church in a long time. We came upon a Catholic Church so while my mother-in-law went to shop, we went into the Church. She came into the Church shortly thereafter and prayed for a little while. It was then I realized why I was in Chinatown on the day the Pope died...I was just an instrument...

I was big with child and had workers in our home putting up two walls. The phone rang and it was my mother, telling me the news through her choked tears. We didn't stay on the phone because we were speechless (unusual for us.) I had taken her call in my bedroom so I let myself cry for a bit. I called the children to my room and told them. We all went back out to our living room where two Mexican/Spanish-speaking sub-contractors were working on the walls. They looked at me and I realized that I must have looked a mess. In way of explanation, I asked the one worker who spoke a little English if he was Catholic...picture me gesturing to our framed picture of Our Lady of Guadalupe. He said yes and I told him the news in my broken Spanish. He translated for the other worker. Both of them froze and tears came to their eyes. The first worker touched his heart and said "Papa." We all naturally bowed our heads, blessed ourselves, and silently prayed. We blessed ourselves again and went back to work. Words can't touch the feelings I had...have.
