Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My little guy is named Nicholas Karol, for John Paul II. His Nicholas feast is in December, his birthday is in December, and Christmas is in December. We've always told him that when John Paul II died and was named a saint, he'd have a new feast day to celebrate. And he always hoped it would be in the spring and not during Advent . Guess who's counting the days until April 2? Here's my question: when John Paul the Great is canonized, will April 2 definitely be his feast day? Is it inappropriate to celebrate this year, emphasizing that this was the day he went to heaven and became our intercessor? Any ideas for an appropriate remembrance of the day we all cried a year ago?

I don't know when they set the feast days -- sometimes it's their birthday, sometimes when they die, sometimes some other memorable event.....

I think it's totally appropriate to celebrate the anniversary of his death. He was such an awesome man and I'm sure he'd smile down from Heaven knowing the people remember him for his life on Earth. Our JohnPaul (officially Johannes-Paul as he was born in Austria) will get a bang out of having this upcoming day to celebrate the man he thinks of as the only Pope! (Course he's just 3 )

Elizabeth,

I think it's a great idea. Could you use any of the ideas from the Unit Study on John Paul the Great?

I have been looking around...I thought there was a long discussion of foods and ways to celebrate his anniversary. That probably was CCM. I did a few searches and came up short.

Here is the link to the discussion about Pope John Paul II Notebooks from last year in case you can use any of the ideas in the thread to celebrate his unofficial feast.

Our family also held a birthday memorial for John Paul II last Spring. (I believe his birthday is May 18th.) If I can find the plans for that day, I will post them.

Great idea! Don't forget to add that Holy Mother Church hasn't pronounced him a saint yet, though. Maybe you could add a little lesson on the steps to canonization.

My kids find that fascinating. . .that God allows "actual real" miracles to show us someone is in heaven.

Thanks for the reminder, too, elizabeth that its right around the corner!!

PS--I have a son named John Paul, too (or-- 2)!

Strangely enough, we had a discussion about John Paul II, sainthood and miracles today. My children think he is already a saint! (Well, now they don't, but I did tell them I thought they would see his canonization in their lifetimes.)

And we had a conversation about the upcoming anniversary of this death here today. I mentioned the anniversary in early April and my older girls were flabbergasted that it had been an entire year since his death. They pray every night during our family prayers for his canonization, so it is always on their minds. It was strange to realize that the year seems to have flown for them. I remember time seeming to go so slowly at their ages. I get the sense that my children and I both tend to think of our beloved Pope John Paul as having only just left us and as Pope Benedict as just having been elected!

Maybe that is what I was thinking of. I remember seeing some plans celebrating John Paul.

That year has flown by us, too. I had personal events that marked that time deeply for us...and it just seems like yesterday.

Our parish is "celebrating" by having a holy hour with benediction on April 2nd at the hour of his death.
