Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does any one know of a good book that covers ( in brief to hold interest of 9 year olds) the history of the Church?

Similarly, anything on the history of the Bible and how it came to be?

Any recommendations?

Thanks
Bev

My first thought was Story of the Church- Johnson, Hannan and Dominica and Bible History - Schuster but these are aimed at children 6th-8th grade so a bit too old. Although the Bible History is not really on how it came to be, more reading parts and answering questions.

I'd recommend 2000 Years of Christianity by Gloria Thomas and Warren Carroll for a brief overview of church history if you can find a copy (it's out of print).   There is a fold-out painting for each century with a short accompanying article and my nine year old quite enjoys going over the artwork representing each century. The main articles are a bit over her head but it's been very easy to narrate the history in the pictures. [You can still buy a booklet Celebrating 2000 Years of Christian History with the articles and very small copies of the picture)

We've also used a catholic history text such as The Old World's Gifts to the New and a book of Saints such as The Loyola Treasury of Saints to find more information.

Another possibility can be found here at Heritage History (a website hosting a collection of out of copyright history books).

There is a series of Church History books by the Sisters of Notre Dame which might be appropriate.
