Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi there, gals.

I'm doing a little research for my own betterment and I've been thinking lately about how Mary is depicted in film.

Does anyone have any good movies about Mary to recommend? I know her life was pretty quiet; Mary is about helping everyone to reach Christ ... but there must be some good movies about her, right? Or not?

Mary of Nazareth

Amazon has a VHS of it too (we have the VHS at home).

This movie is only about the life of Jesus from the day of the Annunciation - it starts that morning.

My only real qualm is that Mary is portrayed with a fair amount of pain during childbirth, but since we don't have an official church teaching, we are open to discussion on that one. Some people think that Mary was too "teasing" with Joseph but I don't see that so much (and it was only before they were betrothed).

I LOVE the scene in the Temple when they find Jesus. The tone of Jesus' voice just reminded me that while we generally those lines of His as rebuking His mother, that wasn't necessarily the case.

Of course, as a Montessorian and CGS-influenced person, I love the opening scene of the earth in space, and the camera pans in on Israel - it REALLY sets the location as a very real thing.

Netflix has The Miracle of Fatima (kids love it) and a documentary that I've never seen but am getting - The 13th Day: The True Story of Fatima.

The 13th Day is awesome!

Honestly, it would be great if a movie was made on Mary based on the visions of Venerable Mary of Agreda, Anne Catherine Emmerich, St. Bridget of Sweden and St. Elizabeth of Schoenau.   The visions of these four are interwoven in the book "The Life of Mary as Seen by the Mystics" compiled by Raphael Brown.   I highly recommend the book!   Unfortunately it was published by Tan, so the binding of the one I have is terrible, but Tan has been bought out, and any newly published books are so much better in quality.

Yay! Thanks for the recommendations. I'll start my list with these.

There is also the "Mary" episode with Steve Ray in the Footprints of God series.

This topic is so timely for me. Our Lady has been on my mind a lot lately...it's been over 8 years now since I lost my mum, and I heard, just the other day, on Catholic radio someone say something to the effect that every mom, every grandma needs a mom (really,we all do, but this was about Mother's Day ), and that turning to Mary can fill that need. I immediately teared up listening to the show. It didn't point out anything I didn't already know, just was a well-timed reminder, just like your post.

Oh, this is a great idea! Steve is such an enthusiastic person, I need to check this out.

Thanks!

God Bless,
