I'm gathering up supplies and things for studying the mysteries of the rosary during Lent. Dh and I are going to do this, too. The idea here is to make the notebooks useable, a variation on CHC's rosary booklet.
I know there are stories about folks who prayed the rosary and miracles happened. Are there any living history books about Catholic events, saints, or anything like that that I could include as read alouds?
Its this kind of thing where it becomes painfully obvious I'm a convert.

Books,
I'm in the same boat as you. I am very ignorant about many things regarding our faith. However, I was baptized Catholic from infancy. My education was sadly lacking regarding doctrine, etc. I'm trying to rectify that as I teach my children more about our religion. This place is such a wonderful resource for me.

The Vision book, St Dominic and the Rosary is good.
The poem, Lepanto, by Chesterton tells the story of the Battle of Lepanto (1571). It is about a upset sea victory for the Christian forces against the Ottoman Turks following the Pope's call for all Catholics to pray the holy rosary. It is the origin of the Feast of the Holy Rosary.
I haven't read Fr. Peyton: A Most Unusual Man yet. But I know a little about his story and it should be an interesting read - maybe not read aloud.

Do you have a good Catholic bookstore in your area? If so, they may have the video by Father Peyton, famous for promoting the "Family Rosary". I saw it and was interesting.
For the small set, the video "The Day the Sun Danced" is a cartoon video about Fatima and has a lot about the children praying the Rosary.
Also, there's a nice little video widely available called "The Rosary for Little Children" My little ones liked this quite a bit. It's not a cartoon, but it's very kid-oriented.
Last but not least, I'm dredging the deep recesses of my mind to know avail for WHERE I just saw listed a living book about the battle of Lepanto (as opposed to the poem, which I love). I saw it and said, "ooh, that looks good", but where oh where did I see it? Anyone out there know what I'm talking about? If I think of it, I'll post it. It's a great, stirring tale.

Here's a link to an on line magazine with a special Rosary edition. There are some good articles about the Rosary.
I have read, but I believe it is out of print now, Father DeMarchi's, Fatima from the Beginning. I have read parts of this book to the children. It is full of direct quotes about the apparition of Fatima (1917) At each appartion, Our Lady requested the young children to pray the Rosary, every day.
I would love to find a book about Bl. Bartolo Longo or a book with his meditations on the Rosary. Bl. Bartolo has an amazing conversion story. He is referred to as Brother Rosary. John Paul II used his reflections on the Rosary in Rosarium Virginis Mariaem
to encourage the recitation of the Luminous Mysteries.
I also have benefitted from reading Calls from the Message of Fatima, by Sr. Lucia.
By praying the Rosary, you also learn a lot about it. By following the suggestions in RVM, reading a little from the gospel, praying for a virtue related to the mystery, lingering over the Holy Name of Jesus, one really advances in the spiritual life.
Padre Pio prayed over hundred Rosaries a day, that might be an interesting anecdote for children when they complain about one!

St. Louis de Montfort's Secret of the Rosary is definitely a living book. Short chapters make it a great read to children. I have read parts of this book to my young children. (We haven't read this recently. Books, thank you for reminding me about it!)
Leading the Little Ones to Mary is written in the spirit of St. Louis de Montfort by a sister in the religious order founded by St. Louis de Montfort. You could sort of call it True Devotion to Mary for children.
