Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My daughter was born on her feast day and I want to find a beautiful picture book with a beautiful story about her for a Christmas gift. Any suggestions?

There really are so few picture books of saints considering the large number of saints that there are. I have not seen a picture book of Catherine of Alexandria. The closest you might get is the book Saints: Lives and Illuminations by Ruth Sanderson. It is a very beautiful picture book of saints. It's a compilation so each saint only has one page, but Catherine of Alexandria is one of the 40 saints in this volume. There is a lovely illustration and a nice summary story of her life.

We have a picture book from Neumann Press which we enjoy and read on her feast every year - A Story of St. Catherine of Alexandria. Neumann Press books are quite expensive, but they are a family owned printing and binding company so their prices are a little higher.

As far as the book, it is lovely as all of Brother Flavius' books are! It's a fairly long read - we divide the book up between the morning and afternoon. There are a few black and white illustrations and the print size is quite large making it ideal for an emerging reader to read independently. The book is hardcover and the pages are a cream which is easy on the eyes.

Her feast day was on November 25, but in reading about her this year (we read the book because it fit in our historical studies - Catherine was from the early 4th century) we followed a few rabbit trails to find that the Church suppressed her feast in 1969 because so much of her story is legend and poetry. ***Note...I believe that if I'm reading my research correctly that the Church is not saying that Catherine is not a saint, just that they can't verify/authenticate many of the texts surrounding her stories. The Russian Orthodox still remember her memorial on November 24. You might find her on a few calendars that follow the Tridentine rite since those follow the 1962 General Roman Calendar, at which time her feast had not been suppressed.

Probably way more than you wanted to know about St. Catherine of Alexandria!

You probably are reading it correctly because St. Catherine of Alexandria was one of the saints who spoke to St. Joan of Arc. She is definitely a saint!
