Hello! I lurk here in spurts, and I believe this is my first post. I have gotten many wonderful ideas from you ladies in the past & I so appreciate them!
I am teaching a class on Monday regarding the Eastern Rite of the Catholic faith to be followed by a visit to a Byzantine Catholic church the following Sunday.
Is there anything specific that you recommend I cover? Any specific resources?
I am planning on doing a lapbook with the following main points:
5 patriachates
icons
monastic life
history of the split & reunification
concept of disunity amongst Christians as Christ himself being torn apart
Jesus Prayer
icon screen
theotokos
standing for prayer

Ellen,
I can't go dig the books up right now because I have children sleeping in that room, but Seton Home Study has several books on the Eastern Rite that might be helpful to you.You can find them here.
One note: I'm fairly sure the "Living God" series on Seton's page is an Eastern *Orthodox* Catechism and not a Byzantine one.

Yes. The Incarnate God and the Living God are Eastern Orthodox (and are quite nice!).

Thank you! I didn't know Seton had books about the Eastern Rite -- I'm definitely ordering the one on icons!
The Guide for the Domestic Church also looks tempting. I'd love to be able to take a look at it.
Meanwhile, I think I feel a Christmas present for my children coming from Potamits Publishing! Don't their books look lovely?

Ellen,
Those books are just beautiful. Do bear in mind though, that they are written from the Eastern Orthodox perspective. They are not Byzantine, or Eastern Rite Catholic, books. Instead, they draw from the tradition of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which, sadly, is still separated from the Roman Catholic Church. In the instance of the prayerbook, you'll find that the prayers are taken from the Orthodox tradition and will likely be unfamiliar to your children. For example, the explanation of the sign of the cross will need some additional explanation for a Roman Catholic child since it's done differently in the Orthodox church.

I have so appreciated your resources over at Serendippity -- they have been a great blessing to my children -- Thank you!
And thanks for the heads up. I personally don't have a problem with utilizing select books from other faiths, but I should have pointed out that they weren't Catholic. I find the differences help me to clarify for our children what we do believe and why as well as engendering great discussions.
