Hi, just wondering what the conventional wisdom is regarding the value of Vacation Bible School for faith formation? VBS is not something we had where I lived as a child, however where I live now there are lots of VBS opportunities. I don't feel like having my 4-year-old ds apart from me for three hours daily for a week. Does it add a lot to a child's faith formation, or do parents see it as a sort of "camp" or "childcare break" for a week? We do have our own "faith formation" we implement at home. Thanks for the input!

Hi, I run the VBS at my parish. It is usually meant to be a fun, daycamp type activity. It's a good way for kids in the parish to meet and make friends, for their parents to meet and get a feel for the parish and the RE program sometimes.

What a child gets out of it varies. It depends on the program, how it's implemented, how receptive the child is to the message, etc.

We use the K4J vbs materials, which are Catholic (only). Last year the theme centered around the Holy Spirit and how he works through the Sacraments. The music is a BIG part of vbs. Our parish kids really knew all the sacraments and a lot of other good stuff before the end of the week.

It's certainly not required. If you don't want your child to go, she is not really missing out on anything crucial to her spiritual development at this age.

Thanks so much. That was helpful as I have no personal experience with vbs. It sounds like something we might try when my children are a little older.

We also use K4J - the musician who writes the music is a local longtime friend of ours.

Ours is at night and that is tough for our girls. We do still attend, I run the snack station. Our girls love to spend that time with their friends, which I feel is important because they do not get enough time to just have fun with their friends.
