Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I know that nursing moms do not have to fast. My dd is 16mo and i am still nursing her. I dont think fasting for one day would affect my milk supply but dh doesnt agree and does not want me to fast. For those nursing older babies, do you still fast during Lent?

I do.. but I'm very careful to keep my fluids up. I haven't had a problem. When my baby is only nursing for food I don't.

But I don't tend to have supply issues anyway.

When I'm nursing a little baby and not able to fast I still cut out any snacks or desserts but make sure I eat 3 good meals.. even that can be hard

I think it depends on your situation. My son was still getting a LOT of his calories from me at that point, so I would not have fasted.

I'm in the same boat - my dd is 15 months and still nursing, and my dh doesn't think I should fast either. I've never noticed my milk supply dwindle when I cut down on my food intake, but I get shaky and weak if I don't eat enough when I'm still nursing. What I've done in the past is try to fast, but also monitor how I'm feeling and if I start to feel ill I will eat a snack. I try to eat something that is penitential, i.e. healthy and something I would not normally choose/don't like.

Katie is 12 months old and still nursing quite a bit, though most of her nutrition at this point comes from table food.

I don't snack on a fasting day. I do eat 3 simple meals rather than the two for blood sugar reasons as well as for the baby.

Consider simplifying your meals, eliminating anything luxurious. Eat something healthy. Drink water. Maintain your calorie intake. Be sure to drink plenty as Jodie recommends and consider a fast of the eyes instead - something you'd normally enjoy watching or reading and give that up for tomorrow.

I do similiar to Jennifer. I am nursing both a 3 week old and an 18 month old, both of them nurse A LOT!! I would not make it to the end of the day on one meal. I've never been able to observe a real fast, as I'm always pregnant/nursing, and oftentimes both.

I did this last Lent! It can be a sacrifice in and of itself to be nursing so much! OR not being able to fast as you would normally do can be a HUGE sacrifice to ladies as devout as I've seen in these forums

Thanks for asking this question. My 18 month old only nurses once during the day, but many times at night, and I was wondering what to do myself. Last year with a 6 month old I limited my intake to about half what it usually was at each meal and managed to get through a little shakily. I think I will probably have 3 small meals tomorrow, no snacks, and I'm cutting out the ridiculously sugar-laden coffee I've been having in the mornings. (It's amazing how fast one can become addicted to coffee. I just started drinking it in November, and now I'm considering it a huge hardship to give up for Lent!)

Thank you ladies! You all have been a huge help to me. I think i will cut out all snacks and just eat 3 smaller meals. Thank you again!

I was just thinking tonight that this is my fourteenth straight Lent of being pregnant and/or nursing! So, it's been a long time since I have really observed a fast. My 14 month old still gets ALL of his nutrition from me! Even with three regular meals, just cutting out snacks and treats will be a painful enough start to Lent.

When I'm pregnant, I just schedule small snacks in between the the three meals, but I make sure it is simple and only eating that one thing to help me get through. No mindless snacking or foraging. Since I am perpetually hungry while pregnant, it is a sacrifice to do this.

I was able to make it through nursing yesterday with the fast--3 meals with one only as big as the other two combined (except for the cheese I accidentally ate while preparing lunch--I just blanked out and ate that piece that crumbled off while grating. Makes me embarrassed to think of all I must eat unconsciously ). I did drink a lot of emergen-c, though.

Great Post! My 11 month old daughter is very picky about table foods and gets most of her nutrition from me. I was wondering about the fasting and also decided to eat 3 good meals and no snacks. My children have been on the smaller side while I've nursed them, so fasting is a concern for me. I know they'll be alright if I abstain from snacking on crackers and especially chocolate for a while ;)
