Does your parish do anything special for All Saint's Day? Or are your kids going to be dressing up this year as saints? We have a little celebration at our church and the children dress up and say their names in the front of the church. Then our choir sings a litany of the saints. After Mass, the kids get to tell a little bit about their saints and we have a big cake. I'd love to get ideas on homemade costumes and/or see pictures of previous saints.
Last year, ds dressed as his patron: St. Francis Xavier

This year he wants to be (every little boy's favorite it seems) St. Michael the Archangel so I'll be constructing some kind of wings; dh has already made a wooden sword and shield. DS #2 is undecided. I thought about his patron Maxamilian Kolbe (a prisoner striped outfit?)... but I don't know. What will you be doing?

Those pictures are great!!!
We're not even having Mass.  I did find one in the next town that we'll drive to, but it's really hard to teach the kids that this is the *real* holiday when we don't even get reinforcement from the parish.

We'll be having the celebration with the kids invited to dress up on Sunday. But there will be a Mass on Saturday as well (not usual here.. small parish). It's at 8am though so if we go (need to talk to dh and find out what's going on) we won't be dressing up.
We've done St. Florian (roman soldier with red cape), St. Elisabeth of Hungary (roses pinned inside her cape), St. Dymphna, St. Lucy, St. Francis(small craft birds on his shoulders), a lion to go with St. Francis and we had a lion jacket, St. Comgall with mice on his robe (cat toys), hmmm I think I'm missing some but... that's all I can come up with and the kids aren't helping.

St. Alice.. and my littlest guy wouldn't wear a costume last year.. that's why I kept coming up short.

I'm kind of working with what we have this year. We found a princess gown at the thrift store, so my oldest will be Elizabeth of Hungary I think, or some other princess type. I found plastic shields/swords for the two boys, so they will need to be some kind of knights or gladiators or something...anyone know any saintly medieval brothers, since they will be kind of the same costume?
One overwhelmed mom came to our party one year with no costumes for any of her kids, they had a lot going on...she said they were the "church militant"...

"dress up" is popular here.. I came up with most of those costumes from what we had, cardboard, duct tape, and buying a few accessories.

Our Catholic homeschool group is having an All Saints party. Dd1 is going to be St. Rose of Lima. We'll be outside for the party (bonfire, hay rides, etc) so we're keeping it warm and simple- a large white sweater and a brown fleece "habit" (no sewing, yay!!) with a crown of fake roses.
I'm not going to bother trying to dress up dd2 or dd3

I just went by our rectory today to ask about the Mass times for All Saints'.
The secretary said that it is not a holy day of obligation this year, because it is on a Saturday. I kept asking what she meant, because I was really confused...I still am. What is this about????

some holy days of obligation when on a saturady (or a monday?) the celebration and obligation is moved to the sunday that they're close to.. so the celebration of all saints day will happen on sunday the 2nd this year.

Stephanie, In the United States many dioceses have decided to not make it obligatory to attend Mass if some of the Solemnities fall on Saturday or Monday. There are exceptions (Christmas is one).
For the Solemnity of All Saints, the feast is not moved, but the obligation to attend Mass is. So it's still a solemnity, but not a holyday of obligation. Clear as mud?
I could say it backwards -- we have solemnities on the calendar, not all are holydays of obligation. There are 6 solemnities that are considered holydays of obligation in the United States, but now some have been moved (Ascension), or if they fall on Mondays or Saturdays sometimes you do not have to attend. And of course, this varies from diocese to diocese.
But if you do go to Mass on November 1st it will be the Mass for the Solemnity of All Saints. Our parish (named All Saints) is having a special groundbreaking ceremony with the bishop of the diocese to build our new church. It's a big feast day for us.

Thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, our Parish does not have a Saturday morning mass, therefore no All Saints' mass at all! The Saturday vigil is already for All Souls'.

Oh, that's a shame! Is there another church you can attend? My personal feeling is that even though they lift the obligation, I sure like to go to mass for that day!

Maybe add a red cape & white tunic to be the Roman soldier who converted at the foot of the cross?

This probably won't help finding a Saturday daily mass, but there's a website Masstimes.org that could help you perhaps find a closer church. And I know there's another website but I'm drawing a blank.

Oh that's too bad Stephanie, we don't normally have a saturday Mass but our priest is doing one anyway. And the kids have been invited to dress up as Saints for Sunday Mass.
Melanie - and another is St. Florian, patron of firefighters (roman solider normally pictured with a red cape)

Our parish's Faith Formation program has an All Saints Day party. The kids dress up as their favorite saints then there's a parade for the parents and then games and treats. 
For our Catholic homeschool group, we're having a celebration, too. We're a small group, just seven moms, but we wanted to have fun with it. So, we're each doing a little "booth" (table/area in the park) with a game. We took the ideas from Websites and a liturgical craft book. Simple stuff: Knock Down The Deadly Sins bowling game (from a family's plastic bowling game), a St. Therese Rose ring toss, St. Isadore's Produce Roll (just three pumpkins that the kids will push to the finish line, taking turns), St. Christopher Race (the kids running with a baby doll on their shoulders) etc. And the kids will be dressing up as their favorite saints.
Money is supertight this year, so we've had to really brainstorm for ideas. I looked at what we had and gently "guided" the children in that direction.
We had an old faded green tablecloth and some puffy paints, so I made a St. Patrick tunic for my son. He has plastic snakes, so he'll be hauling those with him. My daughter wanted to be St. Therese, and I had NO idea what to do for the nun outfit. Egad! At Goodwill, I found a graduation robe in small, which fits her, and then she's making tissue roses that she will weave with green pipe cleaners for her crown. And for the two-year-old, we're just sticking the girl's fairy wings from an old outfit on him and a helmet from his older brother's knight's outfit. Ta-da, St. Michael. LOL
We don't do Halloween (not in a big city, not with kiddies with sugar allergies), but my kids dress up and pass out candy. And we have a family sleepover in the den while we eat yummy treats and watch a fun movie together. The kids LOVE the family slumber party, and they've been talking about it all week. They've even told their friends, who really like the idea and want their parents to do the same!
