It seems like I have lots of ideas for the younger set, but I'm sort of stumped as to what I should be doing with my fifth grader. I'm thinking along the lines of studying the catechism. Maybe apologetics? What do you do with your pre-teens?

We have My Path to Heaven, the Break Through Bible and I may add Image of God to it but have not decided. He will also read asian/ african saint stories as part of core 5.
I'd also love to do art appreciation with religious ed this year but its probably too complex for me to actually accomplish.

My 5th grade dd is helping me find new Catholic Mosaic titles.
We're doing a color sheet and reading of the saint for the day.
Attending Friday morning Mass at her request.
Religious poetry memorization.
Going over Caryll Houselander's work together.

We are going through The New St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism 1 and The How-To Book of Catholic Devotions(by Mike Aquilina).

In fifth grade we used the fifth grade Faith and Life book. He read stories of the saints and enjoyed the Catholic Mosaic titles with his (five years younger) sister. I think at that time I also started printing out addresses from the pope that I thought might peak his interest. We attended Mass on Wednesdays and he and his sister "said Mass" at home with the Mass kit.
I think I remembered everything... 
ETA to add no I didn't remember everything; we also did the Easter Vigil Notebook project found here on 4Real during Lent.

No one source inparticular.
This week it's the poem in Lesson 4 in the Intermediate Language Lessons book. (Gosh, I only "thought" I loved the PLL book... my 5th grader and I both LOVE ILL even better).
Chelsea can explain the poem perfectly but is having a little problem memorizing the wording but I've told her just to try and memorize one line a day. She might not have it downpat by the end of the week but I know, from my own experience, these things come back to you through the years even when you think you've lost them.

We're also using "Favorite Poems: Old and New" by Helen Ferris and "Harp and Laurel Wreath" by Laura Berquist.
I also have my father's old copy of "101 Famous Poems" compiled by Roy J. Cook. Love this book so much. My mother read my brother and I poems from this book. The poems in it are hands-down, the best.

Okay, more info than you wanted, I'm sure  , but Caryll Houselander was a poet as well. We'll try a few of her poems but this year I'm focused on introducing this wonderful Catholic writer to Chelsea.
I know this looks like a lot but it breaks down nicely:
Daily:
*saint reading and color sheet (lately with the generous help of Waltzing Matilda. 
* work on poem memorization
* Mosaic books appear randomly
Monday:
* Recite poem and discuss it
* Baltimore Cate. chapter---read
Tuesday:
* Copy poem on paper
* Discuss Baltimore Cate. chapter/ do Q/A orally
Wednesday:
CCD
Thursday:

Friday:
Morning Mass

Actually, it's perfect! Thanks to all of you who responded. It really helps to get a picture of what I could be doing. Our crazy life means we have no CCD and this particular kids hasn't had anything formal since his FHC in first grade. Of course the children learn their prayers through bedtime routines and we talk about our faith and have lots of good books around (including Catholic Mosaic ones). I suppose that would be "real" learning, but the opportunity is here this year to realy "do" something, and I wanted to seize it.
If anyone has any ideas to add I am all ears. Thanks again! I'm going to mull and research....favourite passtime of homeschool mums everywhere!

For us, this year will look something like:
Monday- Scripture (concentrating on St. Paul this year)
Tuesday- Saint Study (many saint books, saint of day)
Wednesday- Catechism (Compendium of the Catechism)
Thursday- Church History (spread over two years...
From Didache series)
Friday- Apologetics (again, spread over two years...using Beginning Apologetics series))
I am doing this though with an 8th grader and 11th grader, and we're doing it together this year at the beginning of the day. Their catechism will be some together, some in separate assignments, as the 8th grader is preparing for Confirmation, and the 11th made his last year. I'll use MANY various resources to do this, including some of the Catholic Mosaic titles to add beauty, and some readalouds for literature. This format though, like Cay's, can be used for any level, just using resources for their level.

I forgot to mention, because it's listed under "Art" that we are using Seton's Art 5. It covers the 15 mysteries of the Rosary.
My dd and I examine and read about the painting together. It doesn't take much time at all. We did the pictures of the Annunciation on Mon and Tues and we learned many things.
I also want to get some of Sister Wendy's tapes to watch this year. I'm hoping our library has some.
