Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone here use this series? My dd needs some work in reading comprehension, and she love saint stories, so I thought this looked perfect. I ordered the first one, and I've been flipping through it and had a few questions for anyone who uses them.

How do you use these? Do you read the story aloud or have the child read it independently? How long do you spend on each story?

Thanks!

Emily,
My chidren and I love the books.

Initially, I tried to use them as a reader, but the level was far above my child at the time, and I felt we were missing out on some gems because we were too focused on reading ability. So, we've used them as read alouds ever since, and all the kids really love them that way.

I have a family picture book time in the morning which consists of a few themed picture books for my 3yo, whatever selections from Catholic Mosaic it is liturgically time for and then a devotional reading of some kind. It is during that latter time that I read a story from DSFLF to the crew.

I usually read one story a day, maybe three stories a week. We spend some time discussing the moral or application in a natural way after the story. My older children really get a lot out of this time.

We really like the Stories of the Saints for reading comprehension!

My daughter reads them to herself then I ask her questions. I tell her to read the story twice. Then we do the questions --- but aloud. (Her reading ability is fine, but her writing isn't ... yet the material is perfect for her, so she answers aloud. )

Then, for the vocabulary, she looks up half the words and we discuss the other half. (Those lists can get long.)

And then, for the project, she will do it then next day as reinforcement for what she has learned. Sometimes, she'll tell her daddy about the saint the next day, too --- so he learns and she gets to practice her narration skills.

Hope this helps!
