Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm looking at Mater Amabilis 1B for my 5 year old and 1A for my 7 year old. Is Faith and Life 2 okay if you haven't done F&L 1? Right now we're doing Religion together. If I had one in F&L 1 and one in F&L 2, how well would they combind? Should I put them both in the same level and if so, which one?

I would combine them, but I'd use F&L 1. I didn't like F&L 2 as much because it didn't include the beautiful artwork (from the masters) that the other F&L books include. You can always elaborate in discussions with the kids if you feel that you want to add a bit more. (I supplement with St. Joseph's First Communion Catechism.)

Our religion this year has been to slowly go over the St. Joseph 1st Communion catechism and the 10 Commandments. Does F&L 1 go over the stuff that we have already done? Is it enough to prepare my 2nd grader for his FHC?

Does anyone have F&L 2 handy? I'd love to see what their chapter titles are.

Okay, now I'm a tad confused. What is the revised edition? Is that #2?

Yes... just a revised published edition. Not sure of the date.

I used both F&L 1 and F&L 2 this year for my first and second grader and I didn't think it was too much to use both. I rearranged the order I did the chapters in to make them coincide with the liturgical year a little better and to cover the same topics at the same time(F&L 2 has a few more chapters though). While I agree that the art in F&L 2 is disappointing, I preferred that it went a little more in depth (I'm guessing each year gets a little longer) and that it has several chapters on preparing for first confession and God's mercy and several for First Holy Communion prep. I also think you can easily use F&L 2 without having done F&L 1.

Just another way to combine them. Use Faith and Life 2 for content and cut the pictures out of Faith and Life 1 to display as you are studying F&L 2. I have some older editions and some revised editions. I plan to cut up all my older F&L for the art once I am able to replace with the revised editions - but you can use either edition pretty effectively.

I was disappointed in the content of F&L 1 and unless you have never done Bible stories, never discussed religion or faith or celebrated feasts, there is not much in there content wise. If we used F&L 1 at all it was simply for the art and to look at chapter headings and read from a children's Bible or for conversations. I personally prefer to just go slower in a meatier text and add a lot of Bible stories and St. Joseph Baltimore Catechism.

I do like the inclusion of the great art masterpieces in the other books in the F&L series. But F&L2 is very nicely illustrated - much nicer than the cartoony workbook they were using at my parish.

I think Ignatius Press revised them after the official release of the Catechism in English. I don't even know if the unrevised is even still available. I just wanted to make sure that you knew which copy I was taking the contents from. Sorry for the confusion.

Good luck.

Thanks for all of the advice ladies!! I think I'll just suck it up and do both levels next year. I worry that I'm making my 5 year old work over her head too often.

Where is the best place to buy it?
