Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am looking for some biographical novels of saints, particularly 20th C. saints who were missionaries outside of the Western World. I already have plans for Mo. Theresa, but are there biographies appropriate as read alouds for 9 and 11 yr old girls that might cover missionaries to Africa or other more exotic places?

Would Australia count as exotic??

Bl. Mary MacKillop will be Australias first saint. There is a wonderful biography written for younger readers called "The Black Dress". I'm not sure of the author at the moment. It's a wonderful read. Bl. Mary MacKillop started schools for poor children. She was even excommunicated for a time! You could say that she was homeschooled after a fashion, by her father, who schooled her in latin and greek etc.

Australia would work for one. I'll see if I can find the book. Still need a few others though...

St. Francis Xavier was a missionary to Japan and India, and tried to get into China.

The old Daughters of St. Paul Encounter book "Flame in the Night" is terrific. And perhaps the Louis de Wohl book "Set All Aflame" might work as a read aloud? I think there's a Vision book, too.

I know it's still the Western World but Hawaii is very exotic. So I would recommend Blessed Damien and Blessed Marianne Cope.

Damien and the Bells

I haven't read any, but this site has a large listing of
Marianne Cope books.

African Triumph is one of the Encounter the Saints Series by Daughters of Saint Paul. I know these went out of print and they started rewriting so I don't know if they still have this one or a more recent rewrite but it is about St. Charles Lwanga (from Uganda). Also St. Michael Pro (God's Secret Agent is the Encounter title but there are others on him now) from Mexico.

Edited to add - St. Charles Lwanga is probably a late 19th century saint but maybe that is close enough.

Ann Ball has a book collection of 20th century saints but I don't remember which areas are covered. Also these would not be individual books on Saints but a collection of short bios. These are available through TAN.

I'll look for the Ann Ball book. That would be really helpful. I guess I need to look into finding some oop books, too. We are studying missionaries and non western cultures with SL's core 5 this fall and I want to replace a bunch of the prot. missionary stories with Catholic heroes. I am really excited about this study (second time around)...my girls are going to love it!

Thanks everyone.

Today's saint is a missionary (though 19th, not 20th century) - St. Peter Chanel

Not sure of books about him though.
