I know this is totally on a family-by-family basis, but I was curious if ya'll parents of little ones have let your children see the crucifixion scene in "Jesus of Nazareth" (or "The Passion of the Christ" for that matter, but that's way up there on the more gory scale). I get way emotional and cry
 ....
My children (7,5 and 2) haven't seen it. They are very sensitive to stuff like that, but I'm wondering if I can just show them from the Last Supper to the Carrying of the Cross ... I don't know.
Wondering how ya'll handle this ...

Ours couldn't handle the visual. I have all girls....7, 5.5, 4, 2. They can BARELY handle the CD Glory Stories - Stations of the cross. I have a feeling it'll be a LONG time before we're watching those movies together.

I, personally, think it's too much for young kids. I think the pictures they see in children's books are enough "visuals" for them to get the point without having to see 'real life' versions.  (I don't let my kids watch violent movies anyway, like all of you, I'm sure!) Like Maria, I can't even handle it very well, which in a way is good because it really hits home to know what Jesus did for me (and all of us)!

If you are looking for a movie that is NOT as visual and graphic as "The Passion" I would recommend "The Redeemer" of the set here, which my family watched growing up (made in the 60's). EWTN showed it on Good Friday, and I was so excited to see it again. My kids are young, and I appreciated that there was enough to give them the understanding, but not too much to scare them in any way. For example, the scourging scene doesn't really show any scourging. It shows the soldier bring the whip up in the air, then it focuses on Jesus' hands, and the prayer that he says. It is very true to the gospels, and really good for meditation.
I also love how the movie never shows Jesus' face,like Ben Hur. It kind of bothered my kids, but it keeps it respectful and less graphic.
I have never seen "the Savior" of the 3 movies, but "Redeemer" goes all the way up to Thomas' profession of faith, and "the Master" goes all the way up to Mary's assumption.
I hope this helps. Has anyone else seen this?

We all went to see "The Passion" on opening day. We were hoping for many things in our children. I had to leave with my dd (who is 12 now) during the scourging. She was not watching (her back was too the film), but she could not stand to listen to them beat "her Jesus" anymore.
Everyone needs to judge for their own children. But I truly believe that most younger children cannot handle "The Passion." I do believe that it is an excellent film and portrays what happened more closely than anything that has been produced to this date. However, I believe that there are many people who can not handle the amount of pain and suffering that Christ bore for us.
That being said, we now watch this film on Good Friday every year. It is hard, and (as I grow older and closer to Christ and our Blessed Mother), it becomes even harder and more meaningful for our family.

We have a family tradition of watching Jesus of Nazareth together each Good Friday. We begin with the Last Supper and stop right before the resurrection. We haven't had a problem with the crucifixion scenes being too much for our girls at all.
I really think it underlines just how much Jesus loves us and how far he went to save us from our sins. I also think that seeing Mary at the foot of the cross and later holding the body of Jesus helps them to connect with the Blessed Mother in a very real way. Maybe the youngest children don't completely get that, but they do by age 6 or 7.

No in our family when we tried to watch it all together a couple years back the oldest girls could only get as far as the scene where the children turn into little devils to torment Judas... kind of spooky.
So now the littles watch the Easter story (the title has escaped my mind right now) I posted it under our Holy week plans and the Veggie Tales movie Jonah. My husband and I continue to watch it every Good Friday.

Dh and I watch The Passion every Good Friday, but I can't stomach some of the scenes. I dislike that Judas is given such much TV time, and most of that is private revelation, when even Peter's denial is sped up so fast. I know it's artistic license. I just have to cover my eyes and ears during the Judas, scourging, and nailing scenes.
I highly, highly recommend the DVDs Fuzzy mentioned above, The Savior, The Redeemer, The Master. Your children will definitely be able to watch it.
I don't have the Veggie Tales Easter Story, but we did do the Jonah one during Holy Week, too.

Thanks for the input, ya'll.
We ended up watching "The Gospel of John" in bits and pieces all week. The kids got to the flogging then I had to fast-forward the whole passion until Nicodemus showed up to bury the body. They are very sensitive ... and honestly? I am, too, to the whole crucifixion ...

There's no way my kids could handle the crucifixion scene (or the flogging scene, for that matter) in either THE PASSION or JESUS OF NAZARETH. However, I wanted them to have a "visual" to associate with Holy Thursday and Good Friday, so I let them see the Agony in the Garden scene (they cheered wildly when He crushed the head of the serpent) and parts of the trial. We ended just before the kids start tormenting Judas (that's just a bunch of little kid nightmares waiting to happen!)
