Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Thought I'd start a new thread on places to buy First Communion dresses, since a lot of the links from previous years don't work anymore.

Any on-line successes?
Retail stores?
Please share!!!!

I have several friends who are still looking and would love to see any links you've found!

We bought a dress from First Communions.com and were really happy with them and the dress.

Somewhere someone referred me to these 3 on-line stores:
Flower Girl Dresses for Less
Catholic Children's Company
Leaflet Missal

These links are from Colleen Hammond's list of Modest Clothing....they are white LDS/Temple dresses:
White Elegance
Dressed in White

We got ours at JC Penneys - VERY modest, with a jacket to go over it. We looked at several places before finding a decent, affordable dress.

We got one at JC Penny's - for 25.00 and one at Burlington Coat Factory for 25.00!

We go today to buy another one as daughter #3 who makes her FHC on Easter!

Whoooo hoooo!

Thanks for the links, Suzanne!

Well.. I made the one for my oldest daughter.. and the her and her sister conspired and came to ask me if daughter #2 can wear daughter #1's dress.. so I get out of having to either make or buy one

But I've seen some lovely dresses on ebay.. some are obviously dealers selling through ebay (multiple sizes and many styles etc) So it's definately worth checking out.. though they change all the time so hard to say if there is something appropriate at any given time.

Strasburg Children

We have a store locally, so we were able to try on. I would say that they run a bit large. The quality is really lovely.

Here's where we got Maggie's last year: One Small Child - their prices are good and the delivery was quick.

Maggie's dress was sleeveless with a high neck -- I just made a shrug in a pale pink and by changing the belt to a pastel stripe, she could wear it to her cousin's wedding in June!

We have purchased flowergirl dresses (that could have been used as FHC dresses) through ebay and online stores that sell the same kind of dresses and I would say that they are not great quality. Good enough to be worn by one or two daughters, maybe three, but not the kind of quality that will stand up to repeated use. They were good enough for the day, is what I have found and worth the inexpensive price, but that was about it!

My oldest's was given to her by her Godmother, but we found my 9yo's at a consignment sale for $5!! It was a size too big but with the bow in back tied tight you couldn't even tell. So don't forget consignment/thrift shops.

Hello,

Big time lurker here but I had to chime in when I saw the links for the LDS "temple dresses". Please research very carefully before buying these dresses. When my daughter was to be confirmed I looked into these and what I found was disturbing. I could not, as a faithful Catholic, give my money to these companies or have my daughter wear a dress that was made specifically for the purpose of a "temple dress"
Again, please do your research.

In Christ's Love,
Cathy, homeschooling mom to 4 wonderful blessings

I looked too, Cathy...

My First Communion

(this one was mentioned above)

They have a wide variety of sleeve lengths, not just short/sleeve-less dresses. I was looking for a long-sleeved/longERsleeved dress, and found several, all of them pretty.

Hi everyone,

Interesting that this post would re-surface JUST as I am returning from a failed trip to town to try to find a pattern for converting my mother's wedding dress into a First Communion Dress. I thought it would be easy! I figured there would be numerous choices in a flower girl type pattern section. Not so!!! There were only a few dresses size 8 and under, which she MAY be able to fit into with a lot of length added, but I wanted a size 10 to be sure.

Does anyone know of patterns online for dresses like this or does anyone have any expertise/advice on how to convert a wedding dress down to a Communion dress? (or links etc.) Thanks!!
